Title - 'Loggins & Messina' [SACD]
Artist - Loggins & Messina

I know, I know. I thought that Loggins & Messina were just a prolific, and beloved duo from back in the day too, but come to find out that both Kenny Loggins & Jim Messina have recently come together for their first tour together in decades (in both 2005 and 2009) and, well, wow, color be blind!

For me though, and I hasten to add a lot of other tag-along music lovers, the American rock-pop duo, who achieved their success in the early to mid-1970's, have always been firmly rooted within the safe, cozy, hazy, lazy days of our minds. With their well-known songs such as "Danny's Song", "House at Pooh Corner", and "Your Mama Don't Dance" taking that part of the era to the cleaners, after selling more than 16 million records and becoming one of the leading musical duos of the 1970's, Loggins and Messina broke up in 1976.

Well, just-released on Hybrid MultiChannel SACD format via Audio Fidelity, Loggins and Messina is the second album by singer/songwriters Loggins and Messina, released in 1972. Following on the success of their first album, this album built on the strengths of their debut outing. It also became the true introduction of the team, Loggins and Messina, not as singles playing together, but rather as a team that played as one.

It features two songs that charted, with "Your Mama Don't Dance" reaching its peak at #4, their highest charting single. The album itself charted at #16. It should also be known that the album version of "Thinking of You" is a different recording than the hit single. Kenny Loggins played harmonica on more than one song: "Whiskey", "Long Tail Cat", "Thinking of You" and the Jim Messina-penned instrumental "Just Before the News".

For me though, the pop hit "Your Mama Don't Dance," combined with its incredible, evenflow of a lead guitar solo, makes this track the stand out for my personal listening tastes. That said, three other really wonderful tunes here are the album opener "Good Friend," the album closer "Angry Eyes," and the storytelling of "Golden Ribbons." For those not in the know, "Golden Ribbons," in particular, is a hauntingly beautiful anti war song that is exceptionally notable for it's passion and lack of hate or vitriol. It's really a prayer, if truth be told.

With 11 complete, sequenced songs, perfectly locked together in musical harmony, Loggins & Messina is STILL an album to sit back, close your eyes, and drift harmlessly away to (in the comfort of your own arm chair, and not behind a steering wheel, of course!) Using the original quad (4.0) mixes, Steve Hoffman and Stephen Marsh have done a wonderful job of creating this product. The SACD includes both the 4.0 quad mix as well as the original stereo mix in both SACD and CD formats. Super Audio CD (SACD) is a read-only optical disc for audio storage, introduced in 1999. It was developed jointly by Sony and Philips Electronics, and intended to be the successor to their Compact disc format. Indeed, this SACD format can offer more channels (ie: surround sound), and a longer playing time than regular CDs.
