Title - 'Elgar - Piano Quintet / Sea Pictures'
Artist - Kenneth Woods / English Sympthony Orchestra

For those not in the know, Sir Edward William Elgar, 1st Baronet OM GCVO (2 June 1857 – 23 February 1934) was an English composer, many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire.

Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies. He also composed choral works, including The Dream of Gerontius, chamber music and songs. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.

On this utterly triumphant Elgar - Piano Quintet / Sea Pictures we witness the premiere performance of Elgar's Piano Quintet in a new orchestration by Donald Fraser, with Kenneth Woods conducting the English Symphony Orchestra. This version, which was also named a Premiere of the Year by Classical Music magazine, appears in a studio recording alongside Fraser's choral arrangement of Elgar's Sea Pictures, with Woods conducting the English Chamber Orchestra and the Rodolfus Choir.

1. Piano Quintet in A Minor OP.84
2. Sea Pictures OP.37

Fraser has frequently orchestrated works by Elgar at the behest of individuals and organizations including Yehudi Menuhin and the Elgar Society. But here on Elgar - Piano Quintet / Sea Pictures his work is beyond incredible; beyond just music, if that makes any sense. For together with the devoted, unassuming Kenneth Woods conducted with an easy flexibility that recalls the work's chamber-music origins, this one hour long opus to Elgar is as stunning a rendition as I think I have ever heard.
