Title - 'J.S. Bach - Concertos (Extended Tour Edition)'
Artist - Avi Avital

For those not in the know, the first mandolin soloist to be nominated for a classical Grammy, Avi Avital is one of the foremost ambassadors for his instrument.

Passionate and “explosively charismatic” (New York Times) in live performance, he is a driving force behind the reinvigoration of the mandolin repertory.

More than 90 contemporary compositions, 15 of them concertos, have been written for him, while his inspired re-imaginings of music for other instruments include the arrangements heard on his 2014 recording Between Worlds.

An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, up until this brand new release he has made four recordings for the label including his ECHO Klassik Award-winning Vivaldi (2015).

Recently released Avital meets Avital (2017) with oud/bassist, Omer Avital, explored their shared cultural heritage and brought their differing classical and jazz musical backgrounds into dialogue.

Earlier releases featured his own Bach concerto transcriptions (2012) and Between Worlds (2014), a cross-generic chamber collection exploring the nexus between classical and traditional music.

Released this past March, 2019 via Deutsche Grammophon is his fifth album for the label, a Limited Edition Extended Tour 2CD + DVD expansion on the aforementioned, and yet still highly effective J.S. Bach - Concertos (Extended Tour Edition).

Disc: 1
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Concerto in D minor BWV 1052R
Concerto in G minor BWV 1056R
Concerto in A minor BWV 1041
Sonata in E minor BWV 1034

Disc: 2
Partita No. 2 In D minor NWV 1004
Suite No. 1 in G major: Prelude BWV 1007

Bonus DVD
Concerto in A minor BWV 1041
Sonata in E minor BWV 1034

On this delightfully engrossing, at times breezy, others precise and dedicated, but always playful Tour Edition, the Grammy-nominated classical mandolinist (aided by Paul Dyer on harpsichord; Tommie Andersson on theorbo; and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra) is rightly showcased as an artist who pushes at boundaries and defies expectations.

Overflowing with charm, intelligence and enthusiasm this 2CD + DVD program includes Avi's own mandolin transcriptions of three concertos and a trio sonata by the great Cantor of Leipzig.

To my ear he has impeccable technique; there's no "clickiness" (mandolin players will get this) or fuzz or buzz at any point. He also grabs a number of quick double stops and runs some dazzling passages all through that took my breath away.

Glorious musical moments abound all across the board here and it is perfectly timed as a release to remind the world of what a beautiful and unique addition the mandolin can be to any classical recording. What a unique and truly Blessed joy to behold Avi's work is.

In closing, this true virtuoso brings forth an album retelling for the ages here on this Limited Extended Tour Edition of his J.S. Bach Concertos album and so if you love Bach, or the mandolin, or both, you'll enjoy this, trust me on that!
