Ghost Canyon

Title - Three
Artist - apb

During the 1980s, apb were one of the most popular alternative bands in the New York Tri-State area, touring frequently and enjoying regular airplay on Long Island’s WLIR Radio.

The band’s trademark post-punk dance rhythms energized audiences from the start, with their debut single “Shoot You Down” crackling with edgy guitar and Slater’s riveting vocal inflections.

The band are one of few musical exports from Aberdeen, Scotland, where they formed in 1979. Taking inspiration from the D.I.Y. spirit of punk rock, teenagers Iain Slater (singer, bassist), Glenn Roberts (guitar), and George Cheyne (drums) rehearsed relentlessly and signed with local independent Oily Records at the dawn of the ’80s.

Their second album Three - of which Liberation Hall has now signed an exclusive worldwide catalog deal with the band, seeing Three being reissued in 2023, having originally been released in 2006 - features 14 tracks of the brand of post-punk funk that earned them a legion of fans, but has long been out of print and unavailable internationally.

1. Ghost Of My Love
2. Free Again
3. Love By The Seasons
4. Yawn
5. Drag
6. Bad Tempered Spinster
7. Less
8. Convoluted
9. Shock You
10. Choose Your Exit
11. Rhyme Together
12. House Of The Living Dead
13. 24 Hour Century
14. Death of Rock N Roll

On this upbeat and joyously-erratic sophomore album, one where their style of clean, melodic punk with a clear focus on the bass – but now without the 80’s production - showcases 14 tracks where not one is a filler, and where the more expensive, and oh-so much better sounding production brings its own warmth to the musical proceedings, this is, without a shadow of a doubt, as good of a reunion album as you could hope for.

Since very few people seem to know of this band, back then in their glorious heyday, here at a time when (in 2006) they had come back together for another shot at making music for their fans, or even as they continue to tour as originals on the circuit today, the best, and most loving way one can describe this band is to say they are a gorgeous mix of Gang of Four and The Clash (or, for those newer to the scene, such current bands as Franz Ferdinand and The Rapture) at their best.

We first get introduced to this sophomore album with the new wave rock Ghost Of My Love and that is followed down the line by the the grunge rock of Love By The Seasons, the frenetically-charged, drum-led Choose Your Exit, and then come the brilliant, energetically-hued pairing of Bad Tempered Spinster and House Of The Living Dead, the album closing on the triumphant Death Of Rock n Roll.

The CD reissue features its original artwork and apb remain an active touring band which includes original members Slater, Roberts, and Cheyne, which means a whole new generation is primed to make their acquaintance.
