This magnificently impassioned, and expertly crafted new recording opens on the military-hued, spontaneous rhythms within The Wreck Of Edmund Fitzgerald and the lower-ebbed, at first, Kurt Rosenwinkel’s guitar soaring soon thereafter How Many Roads, and they are backed by the simply sparkling finger-snapper Ahead By A Century, then comes their unique take on the old sea-shanty Shenandoah, before we are brought forth the jagged improvisational skills, combined with some luxuriant melodies from all concerned, cohesively jamming together for the 11 minute I Hear.
The wholly captivating Jib Set and the veritably shimmering Canadian Folk Song are up next, and they are in turn backed seamlessly by Kim Cass’s upright bass-led Rentrer (which itself soon turns into a beautiful, and harmonized set of syncopated rhythms), the recording rounding out with the euphorically-charged Sarracenia Purpurea, coming to a close on the cinematic glow found within Red River Valley.
Born in 1985 and raised in Vancouver and Victoria, Hersog has become a vital voice as a trumpeter, composer and arranger. A 2016 graduate of New England Conservatory, Hersog won the school’s prestigious Gunther Schuller Medal. He studied with a who’s who of jazz at NEC. Hersog teaches jazz trumpet at Capilano University, where he also writes for the school’s big band and leads a trumpet ensemble.
