Gorgeous (Special Edition) [Blu-ray]
(Jackie Chan, Shu Qi, Tony Leung, Emil Chau, Stephen Chow, et al / Blu-ray / PG-13 / (1999) 2023 / 88 Films)

Overview: Young and beautiful Bu (Shu Qi, The Transporter) finds a romantic message in a bottle near her family restaurant in Taiwan. On a whim, she flies to Hong Kong to meet her potential soul mate, who turns out to be Albert (Tony Leung, Infernal Affairs), a gay beautician pining for his ex.

Taking pity on the girl, he brings her to his workplace, where she falls for the wealthy and lonely C.N. Chan (Jackie Chan, Rush Hour, Supercop). But when Chan’s lifelong enemy, Lo, discovers Chan has a new love, he decides to ruin their happiness.

Blu-ray Verdict: OK, starting at the beginning, one common misconception about this movie is that when people think of Jackie Chan, they instantly think action movie, but up front, he stated that this movie was to help Golden Harvest (and he wasn’t even supposed to appear in it originally; he was only supposed to produce it).

Furthermore, the original lead actress playing Bu said she would only do the movie is she could act against him. After he had agreed to this arrangement though, the actress dropped out due to scheduling problems and that’s how Hsu Qi was brought onto the project.

The style of movie is also meant to be more appealing to the people of Hong Kong, rather than the United States. It is not meant to be an action movie which is why the fighting is only a subplot. It was supposed to be more geared towards acting.

And even though the dubbing is not great in certain chunks of the movie, I personally liked the movie a lot. Tip: It is much better to see with the subtitles on.

As for the content of the aptly-named Gorgeous, well, and as much as the movie also tries to (unsuccessfully) mash up two story lines - first, it’s a love story, then an inter-business rivalry, then back to the love story; which all might be a wee bit too much for the English-speaking viewers - behind all the rough edges exists a charming love story (and one where both Jackie and the lead actress Qi Shu interact flawlessly).

It is good to see Jackie expanding his range. Remember Jackie fans, he’s getting older, and soon he will not be able to perform the crazy stunts we’ve come to know and love. However, this film shows that Jackie can play sincere and still be the Buster Keaton of modern cinema!

Finally, it would be foolish of me to not mention the action. There are some spectacular fight sequences in this film that though I feel are unnecessary, are still great to watch (especially the one-to-one hand fighting, which is a rare treat).

All in all, as you watch this film, please keep in mind that it was meant for Asian audiences, initially, and was never meant to be released in North America, and thus you will find yourself smiling throughout (and with those pesky subtitles on, of course!).
