Renfield (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital)
(Nicolas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, et al / Blu-ray + DVD + Digital / R / 2023 / Universal Pictures Home Entertainment)

Overview: Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss: Dracula (Nicolas Cage).

For centuries, Renfield has slavishly served Dracula by procuring his master’s prey and doing his every bidding, no matter how debased.

But now, Renfield is ready to look for a new life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness, if only he can figure out how to end the toxic, codependent relationship.

Blu-ray Verdict: Flawed, uneven but far from terrible, this cheeky fantasy film features Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, Dracula’s hapless assistant who lives in 21st Century New Orleans and is awakening to the grim reality of his slavish relationship with his master.

Nicolas Cage is his usual full-throated, over-the-top self. Hoult is quite good as a fiend with a heart of gold and sensitive soul underneath his supernatural strength and deadly capabilities. Awkwafina is enjoyable as an idealistic cop who labors to get to the bottom of things amid a confounding body count and a hopelessly corrupt New Orleans police department.

Ben Schwartz is very likeable as an amateurish heir to a crime family. Shohreh Aghdashloo gives her funniest performance ever as his evil mother and crime boss.

This is the kind of film people would throw the campy label at, but I rise up in defense against that connotation. Describing this film as campy is to miss the point. The film doesn’t take it too, too seriously to be considered camp.

Instead, it reaches a higher echelon of lowbrow, unpretentious diversion. The story line revels in its anarchy, never becomes too self-conscious and delivers a good, fun, wicked old time!

I mean, come on guys. This movie is exactly what it was supposed to be. Over the top. For pity’s sake, it’s got the most OTT version of Nicolas Cage as Dracula! This movie is wild. Hilarious. Action packed. Gory and a little bit of emotion also spills out of Nicholas Hoult’s character too, the titular Renfield.

It was done correctly and should be looked at for what it is. It’s a goofy film from the off so you have to go into it expecting nothing less! Recommended to open-minded and laid-back viewers and Cage fans.
