Kill Zone: Special Edition
(Ted Prior, Fritz Matthews, David Campbell, Johnny Venokur, et al / Blu-ray / R / (1985) 2023 / MVD Rewind Collection)

Overview: Colonel Crawford (David Campbell, Killer Workout), the sadistic commander of an advanced military training center known as “Scare Camp”, has created the most grueling and realistic exercise imaginable; to him it is brilliant, to his men… deadly.

To Vietnam War veteran Jason McKenna (Fritz Matthews, Deadly Prey) it becomes all too real. His ability to distinguish between flashbacks and the ongoing exercise slowly fades. Driven by emotional terror McKenna believes he must kill to survive.

He escapes the simulated prison camp and begins his reign of terror; killing the unsuspecting residents of a nearby town. Now it is up to Colonel Crawford to stop him in this action-packed adventure from writer / director David A. Prior (Deadly Prey).

Blu-ray Verdict: For those unaware, Killzone is the precursor of the legendary Deadly Prey, also directed by David A. Prior for AIP two years later. The plots are very similar too. Colonel Crawford runs a training camp for soldiers where they are working hard to be fit and ready for therir next missions. One of the soldiers, McKenna is depressed after the Vietnam war and starts losing his mind; believing that he is still in Vietnam.

Brutally tortured by Crawford, he manages to escape from the camp, but yet still thinking everyone around is his enemy. Indeed, he kills several soldiers during his escape which causes problems for Crawford (who, by now, knows he crossed the line torturing McKenna and could easily lose his position and rank if anyone were to find out).

So along with a nunch of his men, Crawford goes after his prey with only one thing in mind - killing McKenna. However, he doesn’t know there is a traitor in his squad!

Kill Zone is both a beautiful and yet brutal movie about real friendship (McKenna - Mitchell) and hate (Crawford), where the acting of the main characters is great throughout. Ted Prior and David Campbell do amazing jobs, as stand outs, in my humble opinion, and Larry Udy is great as Crawford’s main henchman also.

Fritz Matthews is not the best actor in the world, granted, but even he upped his game here, and, as usual here in such films, there are a lot of hand to hand fights and gun fire ahoy! For me, the character if Colonel Crawford is still one of the best villains I’ve seen in movies for decades, and even thought midway through watching it, that he could have actually turned it up a few vicious notches; but didn’t, of course (although his fight with Mitchell is a pure masterpiece to behold).
