The Boys - Season 3 [Blu-ray]
(Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, et al / Blu-ray / NR / 2023 / Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)

Overview: Based on The New York Times best-selling comic book series, The Boys follows the eponymous team of vigilantes combating super-powered individuals who abuse their powers, offering a fun and irreverent take on the consequences of superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians, and as revered as gods, using their abilities for wrongdoing rather than good.

In season 3, it’s been a year of calm. Homelander’s subdued. Butcher works for the government, supervised by Hughie of all people. But both men itch to turn this peace and quiet into blood and bone. So when The Boys learn of a mysterious Anti-Supe weapon, it sends the crashing into The Seven, starting a war, and chasing the legend of the first superhero: Soldier Boy!

Blu-ray Verdict: For those not in the know, The Boys is mostly based upon the comic book series by creators Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, though it has taken a different direction than the graphic novels especially concerning characters like Black Noir and his relationship to Homelander.

At the risk of sounding like a prude, The Boys is absolutely NOT safe for work or appropriate for children under 18; the show takes a perverse pride in pushing the boundaries of what people can see on tv. But for adults who are bored with most of the shows released on services like HBO, Netflix, and even Amazon, you’re in for a treat as long as you have a very strong stomach and are not bothered by constant profanity.

This show is filled with actors and actresses that were mostly unknown before the show began but who are absolutely fantastic. Anthony Starr’s hedonistic, depraved, and outright evil Homelander is what Superman could have been had he not been raised by loving parents. Karl Urban, who is good in literally every movie and show he appears in, makes an amazing Billy Butcher.

The rest of The Boys, Mother’s Milk, Frenchie, and The Female are wonderfully portrayed by actors who are a lot of fun to watch, and so are the actors and actresses who portray the other members of The Seven.

Starlight, played by the lovely Erin Moriarty, is great as the newest member of The Seven who falls in love with the second-newest member of The Boys, Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid, who has a massive career ahead of him) and who is extremely conflicted between her former idolization of The Seven and the truth of what sort of people The Seven and other superheroes truly are. Seriously, I’ve not seen a single actor or actress who has been anything but great in this show.

As for season 3, as a whole, well, early on The Boys sets the stage for a final showdown between The Boys and Homelander. Events transpire such that the crew is out for blood - Starlight is forced to be Homelander’s love interest, Hughie comes to realizes that Neumann, who he’s worked under for the past year, is yet another homicidal Supe, and MM … not sure why MM gets all riled up, but he does! Everyone’s down to kill Homelander, basically, which makes this a rather compelling premise, to say the least.

Oh, and subtly in the background, Stan schemes for a ‘better product’ with the invention of Temporary V and, of course, there’s Homelander himself, who’s been neutered by a video clip, and nearing a mental breakdown driven by his impotence. And so the pot boils!

This is proof that even Amazon can make amazing original content that can rival any other in the world. The Boys is infinitely better than Rings of Power and is infinitely more worth you spending your valuable free time watching. From the humor, the production value, the performances from the crew, everything about The Boys is beyond great.
