In order to defeat the monsters, they must call on their new friends for help!
DVD Verdict: From executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Walker, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and
Richard Hatem, TITANS is gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. The live-action adventure
series follows a group of young superheroes from every corner of the DC Universe as they band together to
form one of the most celebrated comic book teams of all time: the Titans.
Recruited by Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites), the team consists of Starfire (Anna Diop), Superboy
(Joshua Orpin), Beast Boy (Ryan Potter), Raven (Teagan Croft), and more. As they come of age and try to find
where they belong, the Titans must defend against supervillains, dark conspiracies, corrupt laboratories,
and demonic possessions – across Metropolis and beyond.
In my humble opinion, this show (in general) is such an inventive show with engaging characters
and so far (albeit lovingly) out there that it doesn’t need to event raise the bar, all it has to do is
veritably stoop to even see it!
The darkness and silliness of these stories is a brilliantly insane writer’s drug induced dream, some in full
sexual SpectraVision. Chock full of engaging and real feel characters, this fourth season Dick Grayson
(Brenton Thwaites) has left Robin (and Batman) behind and is working as a Detective, when he meets Rachel
(Teagan Croft) a young, recently orphaned girl, whose dark powers may stem from her mysterious past.
When the pair are forced to go on the run, they meet Kori (Anna Diop) a woman whose memory has been lost
and can generate fire from her hands and Gar (Ryan Potter) who has his own secret powers as the result of a
mad scientist. Together they form a team to defend Rachel from forces looking to harness her power.
Visually it’s simple and beautiful by turns, with great sets and effects that are high on the practical side,
using CGI where it enhances the story rather than engulfing it. It has a hip retro vibe helped by amazing
hair/makeup and costume design fabulously pulled from every decade back to the 1910s.
There are many formulaic shows out there and then at the far other end of the spectrum are these lovely few
unique works of art. They push the horizon back and the medium forward. They get under our skin and crawl
around and don’t leave us be. Others include shows like Dirk Gently, Legion and Doom Patrol, to name but a few.
Also, and on a side note, I would say, that though I enjoyed it quite a bit and the musical choices are
amazing, some of the storyline gets to be a little familiar across the seasons. My one personal (small) gripe being
you’d have thought Dick might have learned a lesson about not lying to the team, but apparently not!
So thank you, each and every actor who had me caring and wanting more and often exclaiming with them
WTF? For these stories here in the fourth season, let alone the entire season, in general, do NOT follow
normal continuity, but instead defy all comic panel borders and venture wherever the narrative landscape
seduces and chides the team and us to go.
So kudos and high praise to every soul whose courage, imagination, evident hard work and guts went into this
opus for here we had a show that was colorful, engrossing, silly when it needed to be, but moreover always
engaging and boundary pushing.
