My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 [Blu-ray]
(Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Louis Mandylor, Elena Kampouris, et al / Blu-ray+DVD+Digital / PG-13 / 2023 / Studio Distribution Services)

Overview: When Toula (Vardalos) plans a trip to Greece to honor her late father Gus’ (Michael Constantine, The Juror) final wish, the family’s reunion becomes complicated with the reveal of a deep family secret.

With non-stop laughter at every twist and turn, the highly anticipated third installment of the franchise brings a heartwarming reunion that honors the essence of what makes the original so unique.

Blu-ray Verdict: When I think romantic comedy on a Greek island I think Mamma Mia! Which are two words that could be used to describe this third instalment in the Big Fat Greek Wedding franchise.

The majority of romantic comedy’s that are made seem to have a limited cinema release and then they’re throw onto home video and forgotten about. With that in mind, it’s a rather lovely surprise and in a way a thing to be applauded that the Big Fat Greek Wedding Franchise is now on its third film.

I think this franchise has been massively bolstered by how well the original did at the box office bringing in $368.7 million worldwide on a 5 million dollar budget back in 2002, which is an impressive profit margin for any film (DC take note).

With that being said, 21 years later and the Portokalos family are back and they’re off to their homeland of Greece for a family reunion or so it seems. This film felt like the third in a franchise in that you know the characters, you know how the plots are going to resolve before the films even started and that in itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After all, the first film found an audience and was successful at pleasing that audience so why change anything now?

Some of the jokes landed, some were met within my living room, family viewing audience with absolute silence, but whilst it was never hilarious there were enough chuckles to stop the film from being boring.

Some of the acting was a bit rough around the edges, sure, but the film isn’t trying to win any awards, it’s just trying to recapture the hearts of its audience like the first film did.

Yet again I find myself saying that it was just alright, it passed the time, but that said, I would still lovingly describe this as a beautiful Sunday afternoon siesta film, where if you fall asleep you aren’t going to be worrying about having missed anything important within the plot.
