CANNED FILM FESTIVAL - See a Free Movie!!

Feed the Hungry — See a Free Movie!

Thursday, November 11, 2010

Get a free flick for just five cans!

96.3 WDVD & 93.1 Doug-FM present Canned Film Festival, Thursday, November 11, 2010 at MJR Digital Cinemas.

Anyone who brings at least five cans of food to any MJR Digital Cinema (excluding the Adrian location) will get free admission to any movie, that day only, any time from 4:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

It’s a “win-win” situation to help feed the area’s hungry while getting to see a first-run movie!

96.3 WDVD’s Morning Show, Blaine and Allyson in the Morning, will be broadcasting live from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the MJR Southgate Digital Cinema 20 located at 15651 Trenton Road, Southgate, MI 48195.

All canned food donated during the Canned Film Festival will be collected and distributed by Gleaners Food Bank to food providers in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Livingston Counties. Kroger has issued a challenge to the public: for every Kroger brand canned good donated, Kroger will MATCH the donations up to $1,000!

Last year’s Canned Film Festival was highly successful with over 8,000 people attending the five MJR Digital Cinemas and donating 45,000 pounds of food!

Chatting with both Mike Mihalich, owner of MJR Digital Cinemas and Julie Law, Director of Marketing and Promotions at 96.3 WDVD / 93.1 Doug-FM, I first asked Mike why he created this special day for the Gleaners at his MJR Digital Cinemas? "Julie Law and her team at 93.1 Doug-FM and 96.3 WDVD brought us on board 4 years ago. They chose Gleaners, which is a wonderful organization that we are proud to be involved with."

And who named it the Canned Film Festival - as that's very clever! "93.1 Doug-FM and 96.3 WDVD created the event and name."

Julie, on Nov. 11th, 96.3 WDVD's Morning Show crew will be there, but why choose their morning show? "Blaine & Allyson in the Morning are big supporters of giving back to the community. They are aware of how the economic hardships have affected the food pantries. They are showing their support by donating their time and hosting a special broadcast from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m."

And with MJR Digital Cinemas is celebrating its 30th year this year, what thus far has been one of your proudest moments associated with it? "I think knowing that the great patrons of MJR Digital Cinemas often times bring cases of food, not just the 5 cans means a lot. It isn't just about getting into the movie for free. It is a community effort to help others. Last year we raised over 45,000 pounds of food for those who needed it."

Mike, on a personal note, if you were a moviegoer new to the whole MJR experience, and you came to donate your cans and watch a film on the 11th, what would probably strike you first about the whole MJR cinema movie-going experience in general? "New MJR moviegoers will notice the incredibly clean, family friendly theatres that we have created and the camaraderie that MJR has developed with its customers."

And finally, Mike, we have all the info for the event listed in this article, but is there anything else you would like to add, something that, perhaps you forgot or would like the public to know? "Suzette Hohendorf, Special Events Coordinator from Gleaners, said there is a greater need this year and even if we raise the same amount of food as last year, it will last only until mid-December max."
