KSM KSM

'Girlz Talk!'

KSM is an all-female American rock band from Los Angeles, California formed in 2006, consisting of Shelby Cobra (lead vocals), Katie Cecil (guitar/vocals), Sophia Melon (bass guitar), Shea Padilla (lead guitar) and Kate Cabebe (drums).

The group released their debut track 'Hero In You' in 2008 on the Walt Disney Records compilation Girlz Rock 2. They toured with the Tour of Gymnastics Superstars in the fall of 2008, and were featured in the televised broadcast of the tour on MyNetwork TV.

KSM got its start in 2006 when the band The Go-Go's decided to mentor a new all-girl teen rock band.

KSM is recording their first album on Buena Vista Records with producer/songwriters Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil.

Exclusive Magazine had the recent pleasure of chatting with all the girls from KSM about their upcoming new CD, their thoughts on each other, their upcoming tour dates, ... and, of course, penguins!

Taking it from the top, and knowing that all your songs are built around what you know - boys, dating, texting, playing and partying - I'm wondering what your musical influences were growing up; and how many still factor in your sound today? "As a band, today, we look to powerful female artists like Pink, Gwen Stefani, Meg and Dia, and Hayley Williams (Paramore). We all came from different musical backgrounds growing up but that has only made us a better band. Some of us came from theatrical backgrounds and others classic rock. I think in our music you'll hear some of those influences still."

You've been described as a "cutting edge all-girl group" ... but is that truly a fair description of KSM on the eve of your EP release?! "That's a pretty fair description, however, we do want people to know that we are a band. We all play our own instruments and we want to encourage other females that they can do the same!"

For the Average Joe who may not have heard of you, and was thinking of buying your new EP 'I Want You To Want Me,' how would you yourself describe your sound? "We like to say that we have sort of a "pop rock extravaganza" kind of sound. Get ready to have fun!"

And talking of that song, there's no way you girls knew the original of this Cheap Trick song that has become your new single, so did you go back and listen to it before you got together to re-record it? "We were actually all familiar with the Cheap Trick version before they approached us about doing it. We listen to a lot of old music as well as new and we loved the song, but we did have to go back and listen in detail to the original before putting our personal touch on it."

Indeed, tell us more about your upcoming new full-length CD ... does it have a title yet and will it tell a story, perhaps? "The title of the album is "Read Between the Lines". This album expresses who we are and where we've been in the past 4 or 5 years. Some of the songs on the album tell stories of friendship and love, and others are girl anthems. Then we've got the songs that are simply fun to rock out to. The album is full of songs that we hope people of all ages can relate to."

How long was this album in the works ... and were there any speed bumps you had to overcome before you finally signed off on it? "This album has been in the works for about a year and we've actually had to push the date back multiple times for various reasons, but we're finally here and we're so excited!"

Indeed, how easy (or hard) is it to create a new, vibrant, wanted-by-the-public sound that both builds on and surpasses the musical wonderment's/accomplishments that preceded it within the industry? "The hardest thing in this industry is to continue to create music that is relatable and relevant, but we are constantly writing and working very hard to keep up. We want to write about real stuff that will always resonate with people."

Having just started a tour with Demi Lovato must be fun for you girls ... what's some of the things you're most looking forward to doing on these June/July dates? "Well, the obvious performing for our fans is the most exciting of all, but we also love catering. :) It's always awesome being on a bus with your best friends for weeks! It's like one big, long party."

OK, if someone close to you had to describe you in three (3) words, what would THEY use? "How others would describe us: Shae: focused, driven, witty ... Kate: random, funny, punctual ... Sophia: classy, sophisticated, intelligent ... Shelby: crazy, outgoing, fun ... Katie: loud, energetic, spunky."

If asked to record one for charity, what '80s (and possibly cheesy!) pop/rock song would you love to cover today ... and why?! "It would be really awesome to cover "Billy Jean" by Michael Jackson because he was and will forever be the "King of Pop". The song would be so much fun to do."

Soooooooo, what does KSM actually stand for?!?!?!?!??!? "All of our names start with a K or an S and Music is what brought us all together."

Lastly, and throwing you a journalistic curve ball, Exclusive Magazine love Penguins ... do you?! "Why, of course we do. It would be weird if you didn’t at least like them a little :)"
