Title - 'Keep On Keeping On' [EP]
Artist - The Truth
I guess I should start at the beginning, but as it's rather a long story, which would subsequently make for an even longer intro, I'll just cut to the chase.
One of my favorite bands growing up in the UK was Nine Below Zero, an English blues band who had a cult following throughout Europe, and were most popular during the period 1980–1982.
When Nine Below Zero split, no-one saw Dennis Greaves starting again with what would become the UK's best Modernist Soul band since the heyday of the 1960's, The Truth.
But sure enough, with the addition of the song-writing talents of Mick Lister, hits like "Confusion (Hits Us Everytime), "Exception Of Love" and "A Step In The Right Direction" saw a full chart assault whilst still playing to a largely new, post-Jam crowd of Mods.
Signing to WEA and then IRS they went through several line-up changes, but Greaves and Lister remained members throughout the group's run (1982-1989).
In 1990 Greaves then reformed Nine Below Zero (inclusive of Mark Feltham) and in 2012 he and Lister reformed The Truth for live performances around the world.
Well, all good things come to those who wait because some 35 years on and via Heavy Soul! Records The Truth have just brought out a wondrous new 4-Track EP CD and vinyl 7" single (limited to just 250) entitled "Keep On Keeping On."
1. "Keep On Keeping On"
2. "Confusion Hits Us Every Time" (2019)
3. "A Step In The Right Direction" (2019)
4. "Life Through A Glass"
Featuring two totally new tracks with the EP CD alongside two new recordings of the bands biggest hits, once the finger-snappin' opening bars of "Keep On Keeping On" arrive your brain instantly acknowledges the fact that The Truth are back and in some mighty fine rollicking form!
A love letter to Mods everywhere along with harboring a delicious Northern soul vein, that's backed next by two splendidly vibrant re-recordings of days gone by in both "Confusion Hits Us Every Time" and "A Step In The Right Direction."
Always two highlights of any live shows, let alone watching the videos whenever they crept onto TV never failed to encourage my hipsway to come to the fore, the EP rounds out with the quietly acoustic new Lister-sung track "Life Through A Glass."
Chock full of all The Truth passion, verve and melodic bounce that always existed it's also pretty brilliant to hear that Greaves has lost none of his distinctive trademark vocals.
Indeed, his brand of stylistic singing that branded each record either Nine Below Zero or The Truth released from '83 onward is still perfectly in place here on this stunning return-to-recording-form 4-track EP CD.
