Title - Triple Trouble [OST]
Artist - The Residents

For those interested to know, Triple Trouble is a feature film directed and written by Homer Flynn and The Residents. The film premiered at the 29th Chicago Underground Film Festival on July 29th 2022 and stars Dustin York as Randall Rose, Jr., the estranged son of Randy Rose, lead singer of The Residents.

The film actually began production in Autumn 2016 under the title Double Trouble, with some footage shot at that time with collaborator Don Hardy; however delays in funding and the January 2019 death of actress Gerri Lawlor meant that the film could not be completed as originally written.

The reconfigured Triple Trouble was shot in ten days in October 2020 during the lockdown’s caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes footage from the group’s abandoned film project Vileness Fats (originally filmed between 1972 and 1976).

The film features original music (and some familiar themes) by The Residents with Eric Drew Feldman and the soundtrack album of the same name, featuring seven suites of film music and dialogue, has just been released on MVD Audio and Cherry Red Records this November.

“From priesthood to plumber: In the wake of his mother’s death, an idealistic but emotionally isolated man replaces his belief in God with a faith in fungus…”!

That’s right, Ladies and Gentlemen, dive deep into the psyche of Randall “Junior” Rose, son of a recently deceased rock star and a former priest who has lost faith in the church.

Convinced that a fungus is a threat to humanity, and accompanied by his only friend Cherry, an AI enhanced drone, Junior slowly gathers evidence to support his bizarre theory, spiraling out of control in the process!

This soundtrack to their 50-years-in-the-making feature film features a blend of extended instrumental cues, film dialogue and spoken word extracts and is everything that you would, or even could imagine being brought forth by The Residents.

Now, of course being The Residents, this is not your usual, every day, run of the mill, musical album/soundtrack to review! That said, I will say that as much as certain parts went on a wee bit too much for me, personally, others on the recording I have grown very fond of.

Simply put, this soundtrack to the film Triple Trouble is a seven track recording chock full of incidental music where time to time, dialogue from the movie can be heard.

Now, if you have not yet seen the movie, much like myself, nothing you hear is going to make sense to you or come with context (welcome to the world of The Residents, my friends).

But does that spoil the listeners enjoyment for what is being heard? Not in the slightest, for as we all know by now, The Residents albums are always, well, usually conceptual affairs, and this is no different.

For a signature Residents sound lovingly resonates throughout the recording, the overall production (being that it is a soundtrack, after all) is very strong, very crisp, and thus this album gets a mighty fine two thumbs up from me!

As just announced by Psychofon Records, there will also be three vinyl variants - a standard black vinyl edition and two special limited editions: a picture disc featuring a zoetrope image of an eyeball-masked Resident (who dances when the vinyl spins) limited to 250 copies, and a die hard art object edition, consisting of a white-streaked transparent vinyl LP, screwed to a foam block and housed in a large tin film canister with handmade spray paint artwork by Psychofon’s art department - limited to only 100 copies.
