[DEC 9] Rosa [Blu-ray]
(Biao Yuen, Dick Wei, Fat Chung, Hsiao-Fen Lu, et al / Blu-ray / NR / (1986) 2025 / 88 Films)
Overview: Two ambitious graduates of the police academy bumble their way through their first big case.
Blu-ray Verdict: Interestingly, Yuen Biao, being the lesser known from the Three Dragons (Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao) hasn’t starred in too many classics that doesn’t include his more famous friends. Rosa is one of those very same non-classics.
Now, and please do not get me wrong here, for Yuen Biao is equally a capable martial artist and actor as his internationally known compatriots, so is Kara Hui, but both of their abilities most assuredly weren’t fully used in this low-slung action/comedy.
That said, the film is still quite entertaining, and there are some fine fight scenes, but some of the slapstick moments are drawn out for far too long and start to get annoying by the end. But, and again, the movie is worth seeing, especially now it has been remastered on Blu-ray via 88 Films/MVD Visual, but perhaps only if you are a huge fan of Yuen Biao and/or Kara Hui (because they both have done some more amazing movies).
In conclusion, the supporting cast is exemplary and gives Kara Hui the chance to kick her customary backside, while the reliable James Tien shows up on villain duties. Things pick up for the lavish warehouse fight climax, in which veteran henchman Dick Wei and Fat Chung do their bit, the fights are (for the most part) vivid and exciting, the stunts electrifying, the humor one can take or leave; but even that mostly lands too.
