Title - 'Running With Scissors' (EMI)
Artist - Various

This new soundtrack CD - not to be confused with the Weird Al Yankovic CD ofthe same name though! - is a, well, fun compilation to say the least! Culling musical highlights from one of this years most interesting new movies, 'Running With Scissors' features all the musical pleasures associated with driving down a '70s highway, the radio or 8-track (if you had some money!) blaring out some catchy tunes. The soundtrack to director Ryan Murphy's adaptation of writer Augusten Burroughs' memoir - a darkly comedic tale of growing up under the care of a mother's therapist - is helped along by the likes of the Average White Band ("Pick Up the Pieces"), Elton John ("Benny & the Jets"), and the Vince Guaraldi Trio ("O Tannenbaum"), making for a nostalgic trip back in time that's only briefly interrupted by a lovely ballad from contemporary singer/songwriter Catherine Feeny ("Mr. Blue"). Other featured acts include, Al Stewart, 10cc, Nat King Cole, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Vince Guaraldi Trio, and Phoebe Snow. Such diverse (and thankfullly remastered) tunes one and all, the only track I would skip is the Charlie Brown Christmas classic "O Tannenbaum." The holiday affiliation is impossible to ignore and disrupts the nostalgia of the other songs!
