Title - 'Greatest Hits: Expanded Edition'
Artist - The Pointer Sisters

The Pointer Sisters were one of the most successful female groups the music industry has seen with 13 top 20 singles and 8 top 40 albums shared between the US and UK pop charts. After working with hugely successful producer, Richard Perry for four years, Planet Records issued Pointer Sisters’ Greatest Hits in 1982.

This compilation, which has been out of print for years now, and is now complete with added hits and bonus rarities, was particularly successful in Australia where it made #11 while the Pointers toured the country. It covered the group’s LP’s Energy (1978), Special Things (1980) and Black & White (1981) and was issued just after their So Excited album (1982).

As well as some notable album tracks, the collection included some of their biggest hits including the Bruce Springsteen penned ‘Fire’ (Pop #2/R&B #14/UK #34), their cover of Allen Toussaint’s ‘Happiness’ (R&B #20/Pop #30), ‘He’s So Shy’ (Pop #3/R&B #10), ‘Could I Be Dreaming’ (R&B #22/Pop #52), ‘Slow Hand’ (Pop #2/R&B #7/UK #10) and ‘Should I Do It’ (Pop #13/UK #50).

The highly successful American R&B singing group from Oakland, California, that achieved mainstream success during the 1970s and 1980s, spanned four decades. Their repertoire has included such diverse genres as pop, disco, jazz, electronic music, bebop, blues, soul, funk, dance, country and rock and has allowed the trio to win three Grammy Awards, and receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1994) along the way. Indeed, the group had 13 US top 20 hits between 1973 and 1985.

This new expanded edition also includes their more recent hits ‘American Music’ (Pop #16/R&B #24) and ‘I’m So Excited’ (Pop #30/R&B #46). The latter would of course be remixed in 1984 and become a massive international hit and ultimately their signature song. Also featured here are some rare b-sides, some of which would go on to be hits for other artists including ‘Holdin’ Out For Love’ (a hit for Angela Bofill) and ‘I Want To Do It With You’ (a UK top ten hit for Barry Manilow).

1. HE’S SO SHY 2. FIRE 3. SHOULD I DO IT 4. SOMEDAY WE’LL BE TOGETHER 5. HAPPINESS 6. SLOW HAND 7. COULD I BE DREAMING 8. THE LOVE TOO GOOD TO LAST 9. TAKE MY HEART, TAKE MY SOUL 10. SPECIAL THINGS

BONUS TRACKS: 11. AMERICAN MUSIC 12. WHAT A SURPRISE 13. HERE IS WHERE YOUR LOVE BELONGS 14. SAVE THIS NIGHT FOR LOVE 15. HEART BEAT 16. MOVIN’ ON (SINGLE B-SIDE) 17. NOTHIN’ BUT A HEARTACHE (SINGLE B-SIDE) 18. HOLDIN’ OUT FOR LOVE (SINGLE B-SIDE) 19. I WANT TO DO IT WITH YOU (SINGLE B-SIDE) 20. I’M SO EXCITED (SINGLE REMIX)

Personally, I'm a HUGE fan of The Pointer Sisters. I remember them as a child with hits like 'Yes We Can,Can.' I remember them having a 40's doo wop girl group sound in the beginning. I even remember them having a song used in a Bounce commercial, 'Jump,' if memory serves me well! Anyhoo, if you also liked The Pointer Sisters way back when, you will LOVE this CD. Rich, real, superior harmonies and invigorating music to dance to, this newly Expanded single disc CD contains 20 tracks.

In closing, The Pointer Sisters are solid singers, and as great as the material is, it always reminds me of a first class Vegas Lounge after hours act! The songs are all catchy, annoyingly stuck-in-your-head-for-days-after lyrics with, basically, no real meaning involved. It's sadly not the kind of stuff that is played on the radio any more, but as time has proven for this band, they never go out of fashion - and God Bless them for that, at the very least.

Out now for all to own, Cherry Red's very own in-house label BBR are thrilled to present this expanded and remastered edition of The Pointer Sisters' Greatest Hits for the first time on CD in a deluxe super jewel case with new interviews with Ruth and Anita Pointer and ten added bonus tracks.
