Title - The World Goes On Around You – The Anthology
Artist - The Mirage

After serving an apprenticeship on the mid-60s Hertfordshire beat scene, The Mirage became house band at Beatles’ publisher Dick James’ Oxford Street demo studio.

After forming a friendship with The Hollies, The Mirage cut a couple of singles for CBS before James and his regular business partner, Kinks/Troggs manager Larry Page, oversaw the band’s subsequent, heavily Beatles-influenced releases on the Philips and Page One labels.

The Mirage then moved over to Mervyn Conn’s Carnaby label, where they cut a single as Portebello Explosion before releasing a 1970 album under the name Jawbone.

A lavish 3CD digipack set, The World Goes On Around You is the first-ever complete Mirage anthology, featuring all of their singles, the Jawbone album, numerous studio out- takes, alternative versions and BBC sessions.

The package even includes some great previously unseen Mirage photos and a new 7000-word essay on the band that’s based around a new interview with guitarist Ray Glynn, who speaks for the first time of their involvement with the film Georgy Girl and their appearance alongside Jefferson Airplane at the first Isle of Wight Festival.

Simply put, it’s the final word on a hugely collectable, highly regarded UK psychedelic pop band.

The Mirage managed to release seven singles on three labels in the U.K. between 1965 and 1968 without getting anything resembling a hit or even a solid cult reputation.

This can be ascribed to two major factors: the absence of significant original musical vision, and the absence of really strong original material, although they did write many of their own songs.

Their upbeat, harmony-laden approach was quite British and owed significant debts to the 1966-era Beatles and the Hollies, as well as lighter ones to the Who.

The most British aspect of their sound was their propensity for songs with a storytelling, observational viewpoint. The most famous of these was their 1967 single, The Wedding of Ramona Blair, about a bride whose groom fails to show up at the ceremony, which has appeared on several compilations of British psychedelia obscurities.

Having signed to Dick James Publishing and served as the house band for that organization, they also backed Elton John at his first solo performances. But, the group split up in October 1968 when lead guitarist Dee Murray and drummer David Hynes briefly joined the Spencer Davis Group.

In fact, in a twist of fate, Murray then became bassist in Elton John’s band, while Hynes left the Spencer Davis Group in spring 1969 (perhaps with Murray, for it is not clear from existing documentation) and re-teamed with the other members of the Mirage to form the Portobello Explosion.

They then did a 1969 single for Carnaby, before that very same band then changed into Jawbone, who also recorded for Carnaby. I hope you are all following along at home!

Anyway, much of the material from their singles, as well as a bunch of unreleased acetates, demos, and BBC broadcasts, can be heard on this quite wondrous new, and first-ever complete 3CD anthology, The Mirage: The World Goes On Around You – The Mirage Anthology, out now via Grapefruit Records / Cherry Red Records UK.
