Title - One Good Turn: 20th Anniversary Re-Release
Artist - Various

For those unaware, twenty years ago this fall, visionary jazz producer, record label owner, and Jazz Foundation of America honorary founders board member Hank O’Neal compiled a special charity album to promote and support the JFA’s Musicians’ Emergency Fund.

Combing his archive of more than 200 jazz album productions, Hank selected 16 favorite pieces for the limited-edition One Good Turn CD - which included rare cuts from legendary players like Lionel Hampton, Gerry Mulligan, Joe Williams, Mary Lou Williams, Milt Hinton, Clark Terry, and a never-before pairing of Dizzy Gillespie & Buddy Rich.

Through a special partnership between 32 Bar Blues, The Jazz Foundation of America, and Hank’s Chiaroscuro Records, the newly-released 20th Anniversary Re-Release of One Good Turn is now out!

100% of the profits from its sale will be sent directly to the Jazz Foundation’s Musicians’ Emergency Fund.

This achingly sumptuous, devotedly heartfelt re-released album opens on the upbeat and playful, titular One Good Turn from an American jazz pianist known for his three handed-swing and his piano solo style, the Dave McKenna Quartet featuring Zoot Sims (1974) and the lushly orchestrated Yardbird Suite from The Jay McShann Trio featuring Phil Woods (1997), and then follows those up with the gently fervent Sonny’s Tune from The Al Grey Quintet (1998), and then we get one of the most phenomenal, gifted, incredible blues singers there ever was, Joe Williams with Jay Leonhart on 5:00 in the Morning (1959).

Up next is the fun vibrancy within It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing from Lionel Hampton and Milt Hilton (1939) and the delicately sculptured Bark for Barksdale by Bill Charlap and Ted Rosenthal (1996), and they are seamlessly backed by the languishing beauty within Blues in Db by Teddy Wilson and his All Stars (1973), the aching yearn of Chitlin’ Blues from Dorothy Donegan and Clark Terry (1992), and then comes the lush, laid back ambiance of Harlem Nocturne with the Lou Donaldson Quartet (2000) and the free flowing Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars from Gene Bertoncini (1995).

Along next we get loving brought forth a dutifully melodious Walk On Water from Gerry Mulligan’s New Sextet (1980) and a studiously assonant I Got A New Daddy from Junior Mance with Etta Jones (1990), and they are smoothly followed by the infectiously-catchy Boogie Woogie on the St. Louis Blues from Earl Hines (1949), the album rounding out on a bedazzled Buddy & Dizzy from, of course, Dizzy Gillespie and Buddy Rich, a sweeping Buds from the Jack Wilkins Quartet (1977), closing on a most rhythmically joyous flashback to 1930 within Nite Life from the amazing pianist Mary Lou Williams.
