Title - Lost and Found
Artist - Vance Thompson

For those not in the know, Grammy-nominated jazz artist, Vance Thompson debuts with Lost and Found - a vibraphone-led jazz quintet featuring a stellar supporting cast of noted musicians including pianist Taber Gable (Marcus & E J Strickland, Braxton Cook), guitarist Steve Kovalcheck (Jeff Hamilton, Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra), bassist Tommy Sauter (Jason Marsalis, Russell Malone) and drummer Marcus Finnie (Kirk Whalum, Kurt Elling).

Lost and Found covers a range of styles and emotions, with echoes of Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, and Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters evident at various points throughout the set. However, the album’s nucleus lies with pristine performances on new compositions by Vance Thompson alongside inspired treatments of Chick Corea’s Pud Powell, Donald Brown’s My Tree Suns, and Harold Alden’s classic, Over The Rainbow.

Acclaimed for years of prominence on the trumpet, Lost and Found’s unveiling signals Vance’s drive for a new sound starring the vibraphones, a reimagined musical revamp brought about by a medical issue resulting in an inspired journey filled with tenacity and passion.

Thompson’s debut album on vibraphone opens on the pleasantly smooth, Frasier TV show-esque Tell It Like It Is and then we get the elegant The Thread of All Sorrows, the artfully flowing Mixed Feelings, before the embodied Sleight of Hand is lovingly brought forth.

Along next is the soft and tender ambiance of Lost and Found which is in turn backed seamlessly by Chick Corea’s flirtatiously delicious Bud Powell, the joyful The Ladies at Rose Cottage, the set rounding out on Donald Brown’s emboldened My Three Suns, coming to an all-too-soon close on their veritably shimmering take of Harold Alden’s classic Over The Rainbow.
