DVD Verdict: Simply put, 'Ocean Giants' is a magnificent, ground-breaking documentary granting a unique and privileged access into the magical world of whales and dolphins. Uncovering the secrets of their intimate lives as never before, John Hurt's narritive takes us on a three hour journey that once watched can never be forgotten.

The documentary is just breathtaking. Showing us the beauty of all the creatures, giving us so-called "inside informtaion" on and about them, and explaining in more detail than I think I've ever heard it explained before their pertinent history and what their body language means, 'Ocean Giants' is a hugely entertaining feature.

And, thankfully, much like David Attenborough, John Hurt has a gift for vocalising scientific exposition to the effect of drawing his fellow mammals in with his undeniably dulcet tones. Indeed, in one stand-out fantastic sequence, we watch as a giant squid (over 30ft in size) falls prey to a giant sperm whale. The squid, ironically, has nowhere to hide in the complete darkness of the deep of the Caribbean.

And, of course, the segement on the expertise of killer whales is quite breathtaking also. First, they show off their savvy with a purposeful lack of sound in a sly, skillfully silent hit on a group of unsuspecting baby seals. Then, in an even more brilliant feat, the killer whales round up shoals of herring for a massive feast. And the dining continues from there - and (nearly) always successfully! These are all Widescreen Presentations (1:77.1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
