'The 4 Musketeers'
(Emmanuelle Béart, Tchéky Karyo, et al / DVD / R / (2005) 2007 / LGF)

Overview: Exile and possibly death are in the cards for the Queen of France in this edgy cloak-and-dagger adventure based on Alexandre Dumas' unrivaled tale of THE THREE MUSKETEERS and their reckless, romantic friend D'Artagnan. Supernatural powers and dark mystical forces add an exciting twist to this classic tale.

DVD Verdict: Some things you shouldn't mess with ... Dumas is one, particularly if you cannot do better. The authors tried to add some supernatural elements to this story and ended up with a long, disjointed film which probably would have been better as a two-parter. Further, the film is not in English. If you watch in English, the characters' lip movements and the dialogue you hear are so disjointed the effect becomes laughable. The swordplay is beyond unrealistic as well---just one of those extended play battles where the directors clearly have no clue what an actual sword battle is!

In this 2005 version, French beauty Emmanuelle Beart (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, 8 WOMEN) stars as Milady de Winter in this costumed adventure set in Alexandre Dumas's world of intrigue. Joined by D'Artagnan, the three musketeers battle corruption in 17th-century France. An infusion of supernatural mystery brings originality to this oft-told story. yep, that's the meat and drink of it all, but man, this film is brutal on the historic soul.

In fact, to be quite brutally honest, I didn't think there could be any worse portrayal of this story when I saw the Disney/Sutherland/Sheen version until I saw the John Woo Musketeer version. Now I have seen a new low. Give me the original movie any day of the week. This is a Widescreen Presentation (2.35:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs and comes with the Special Features of:
