Garfield & Friends: The Grumpy Cat Collection
(DVD / G / 2021 / PBS Kids)
Overview: Get ready for the first three seasons of Garfield and Friends, the beloved animated Saturday morning TV series! This hilarious DVD set includes more than 50 episodes starring everyones favorite feline.
DVD Verdict: Just to bring you up to date a wee bit, Garfield is a fictional cat and the protagonist of the comic strip Garfield, created by Jim Davis.
The comic strip centers on Garfield, portrayed as a lazy, fat, and cynical orange cat. He is noted for his love of lasagna, coffee and sleeping, and his hatred of Mondays, fellow cat Nermal (sometimes), raisins and exercise.
Join Garfield, his canine sidekick Odie and their gullible owner Jon for many memorable episodes, including the one when Jon tried to stop Garfield from buying every useless product advertised on television!
The animation is so warm and comforting, the grain of the audio is perfection, the voices and the dialect of the voices are also warm and soothing especially accompanied by the classic audio grain.
Something about the old style like this is simply delightful. The stories are simple, yet excel at it, especially accompanied by all of the other auditory and visual aspects.
The settings are also comforting, and compact, they vary and are very well done. The jokes are well delivered and sometimes subtle to a point where you can always catch on, and still get the subtle feeling the character went for.
The dialogue really hints at tender connections in-depth, but appears to be regular, casual, almost masterful conversation on the surface value.
Considering all of these variables, the Garfield & Friends show is nothing short of a classic that not only hit everything it went for, but it also has the perfect vintage of the time it was made.
Simply put, Garfield & Friends in my opinion is the quintessential Saturday morning television program. It was silly, it was funny, and it was smart.
CBS made a great choice in 1988 by picking up this Jim Davis creation. But not only did this show have the Garfield crew, Davis also brought along his other creation, U.S. Acers, another hilarious strip that ran along Garfield during the 80s and 90s.
In closing, Garfield & Friends was (rightly) considered a staple of the 1980s childs viewing habits on Saturday mornings, a block of television that is now a barren wasteland of annoying childrens programming.
It will always be remembered for what it was - a popular cartoon made for the TV-watching 1980s kid. I will certainly never forget it, and I will never forget Garfields unique voice.
This 6-Disc DVD box-set from PBS Kids is as good as it gets for this series and thus I implore you to run out and buy it (mask on, for safety, of course!) This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
