NOVA: Picture a Scientist
(DVD / PG / 2021 / PBS)

Overview: Women make up less than a quarter of STEM professionals in the United States, and numbers are even lower for women of color. But a growing group of researchers is exposing longstanding discrimination and making science more inclusive.

DVD Verdict: Ranging from the data behind how and why women and minorities are not as prevalent in Science as they should be to the emotional impactful personal stories of abuse, discrimination and personal and group perseverance, this fascinating NOVA: Picture a Scientist episode also shows people that are supporting change of culture and diversity in Science.

Science has provided humanity with invaluable technologies, lifesaving medicines and awe-inspiring discoveries. But there is also a dark reality to the field: gender and racial discrimination that have persisted for generations.

A biologist, a chemist and a geologist lead viewers on a journey through their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from outright harassment to years of subtle slights.

Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, scientific visionaries, including social scientists, neuroscientists and psychologists, provide New Perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable and open to all.

In conclusion, maybe, just maybe you find understanding that you have a problem that you may not have seen. In a way that if you do not find this PBS episode highly impactful on yourself, then maybe, just maybe you are part of the problem. This is a Widescreen Presentation (1.78:1) enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
