(Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, et al / 4K Ultra HD + Digital / R / (1987) 2025 / Studio Distribution Services)
Overview:Mel Gibson stars as a one-man killing machine, a Los Angeles policeman who recently lost his wife and has been acting increasingly unstable. Danny Glover plays a by-the-book homicide detective with an impeccable record and a loving family.
Now the two are stuck with each other as partners, investigating a suicide that leads to an international crime ring and ever-increasing danger in this blockbuster action thriller.
Lethal Weapon, the 1987 action thriller film from director Richard Donner and starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, will be available for purchase Digitally in 4K Ultra HD and on 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc on June 24, 2025.
4K UHD Blu-ray Verdict: Warner Bros. Entertainment is expanding their 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray catalog offerings this month with the release of the much beloved Lethal Weapon (4K Ultra HD + Digital) in the expansive 4K Ultra HD video format this June 24th, 2025.
For my money, this Lethal Weapon (4K Ultra HD + Digital) sharpness takes a fairly large step forward from others in their 4K Ultra HD catalog and even comes with HDR (High Dynamic Range) for the complete 4K Ultra HD experience, of course.
So, what we have is Lethal Weapon presented to us as a one-disc with a sheet for a Digital HD Copy. Other stand out points you should know are: Codec: HEVC / H.265 (78.61 Mbps), Resolution: Native 4K (2160p), HDR: HDR10
Aspect ratio: 1.85:1 and Original aspect ratio: 1.85:1.
Featuring Dolby Vision and HDR10 for brighter, deeper, and way more lifelike colors, as with most all 4K UHDs, everything that we watch features these qualities - but somehow, this film gloriously shines within them all.
Noticeably crisp with the overall clarity receiving an obvious boost here on this release, what is more is that it is enjoyably noticeable. For as well as some new nuances to the somewhat drab palette courtesy of Dolby Vision, we also get to witness sudden bright pops of color, which makes the eyes draw in, for sure.
One of those moments is, of course, the very first Riggs and Murtaugh meet up! Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is doing some paperwork and discussing information on the apparent suicide of Amanda Hunsaker when he notices a suspicious looking man in a cap with a gun. He charges at the man and is thrown to the ground and discovers this is his new partner Martin Riggs. He then says his immortal line “I’m too old for this shit” and an icon was born!
Another is the infamous grenade stand-off where after Mr. Joshua and his goons have kidnapped Murtaugh’s daughter the two cops devise a plan to rescue her. Things don’t go to plan however when Roger takes out a grenade and Joshua calls his bluff. This proceeds to go from bad to worse with our two heroes getting captured, but it is still a vibrantly alluring scene to behold.
As for the audio, well we get the plentiful choice of: English: Dolby Atmos
English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (48kHz, 24-bit), English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (48kHz, 24-bit), French: Dolby Digital 5.1 (640 kbps), Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1 (640 kbps), Italian: Dolby Digital 5.1 (640 kbps), German: Dolby Digital 5.1 (640 kbps), Japanese: Dolby Digital 2.0 (192 kbps) and Spanish: Dolby Digital Mono (224 kbps).
Overall, this is a very strong 4K HDR Blu-ray presentation, and, for the most part, the audio track remains fairly similar to its DTS-HD counterpart; with much of the action occupying the surrounds with outstanding directionality and placement where effects flawlessly pan between the sides and rears.
As for the film itself, well, Lethal Weapon is an absolutely brilliant film and is the best one of the film series, in my humble opinion. That said, Lethal Weapon caught me and everybody completely off guard when it first came out in 1987. It was a film that no one saw coming.
Mel Gibson was known for his work on the Mad Max films, but he was still relatively obscure in Hollywood. Danny Glover was more or less a serious actor, hence his role in Color Purple. But could anyone have been prepared for what this movie accomplished? Could you be prepared for what it has spawned and created?
Lethal Weapon is a tour de force of action and comedy. Richard Donner will be forever remembered for his role in this movie. But to me, as terrific as his direction is and as amazing as Gibson and Glover are and as terrific as a script that Shane Black has written, there is one unsung hero in this film and many other films that have entertained us for the last 20 years. And that is Joel Silver.
The action is groundbreaking, the humor is hysterical, the chemistry is magic and the whole picture is a delight. That’s truly about all you need to know. As for Joel Silver, take a look at his filmography as it will blow you away at how many films he has done that are pure entertainment.
In closing, made in a time before action movies were packed with CGI this film is packed with action that looks real! Whether it is hand to hand combat, shootouts or exploding cars. The story is gripping and packed with great characters and as much as both Gibson and Glover are great as Riggs and Murtaugh for me it is Gary Busey as the sinister Mr. Joshua who steals every scene he is in!
