Drop: 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray [Collector’s Edition]
(Meghann Fahy, Brandon Sklenar, Violett Beane, Jeffery Self, Jacob Robinson, et al / 4K Ultra HD + Digital / PG-13 / 2025 / Universal Pictures)

Overview: First dates can be rough. In this mind-bending action thriller from the director of Happy Death Day, they can also be deadly.

Violet (Meghann Fahy, The White Lotus) is a widowed mother who has worked up the courage to go on her first date in years with a charming photographer named Henry.

The cute couple’s killer chemistry is rudely interrupted by a series of anonymous drops to Violet’s phone showing a masked intruder entering her home and ordering her to follow a series of instructions. Violet must do exactly as she’s told or her loved ones will die. Her unseen tormentor’s final directive? Kill Henry.

From Blumhouse, producers of M3GAN, and Platinum Dunes, producers of A Quiet Place, comes DROP, the action-packed thriller that proves dating can be deadly. The “tightly plotted thrill ride” (IGN) will be available) will be available exclusively on digital platforms to own or rent tomorrow, April 29th, 2025, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The blood-chilling action also debuts on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on June 10th, 2025.

4K UHD Blu-ray Verdict: Universal Pictures is expanding their 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray catalog offerings this month with the release of the highly anticipated Drop (4K Ultra HD + Digital) in the expansive 4K Ultra HD video format this June 10th, 2025.

For my money, this Drop (4K Ultra HD + Digital) sharpness takes a fairly large step forward from others in their 4K Ultra HD catalog and even comes with HDR (High Dynamic Range) for the complete 4K Ultra HD experience, of course.

So, what we have is Drop presented to us as a one-disc with a sheet for a Digital HD Copy. Other stand out points you should know are: Codec: HEVC / H.265, Resolution: Native 4K (2160p), HDR: HDR10, Aspect ratio: 2.39:1 and Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1.

Featuring Dolby Vision and HDR10 for brighter, deeper, and way more lifelike colors, as with most all 4K UHDs, everything that we watch features these qualities - but somehow, this film gloriously shines within them all.

Noticeably crisp with the overall clarity receiving an obvious boost here on this release, what is more is that it is enjoyably noticeable. For as well as some new nuances to the somewhat drab palette courtesy of Dolby Vision, we also get to witness sudden bright pops of color, which makes the eyes draw in, for sure.

A Hitchcockian thriller that cleverly utilizes modern technology for its twists and turns, Drop delivers on its pulpy premise while providing a welcome showcase for leading lady Meghann Fahy. Fahy is the real gem here though.

She is so effective at drawing on reserves of compassion for Violet and when the camera holds her in close-up and her eyes are welling with tears talking about her struggles, or when they pop out of fear, she’s bringing you along with her.

As for the audio, well we get the small choice of just English: Dolby Atmos.

Overall, this is a very strong 4K HDR Blu-ray presentation, and, for the most part, the audio track remains fairly similar to its DTS-HD counterpart; with much of the action occupying the surrounds with outstanding directionality and placement where effects flawlessly pan between the sides and rears.

As for the film itself, well, Drop is the latest film from Christopher Landon, best known for Happy Death Day and Freaky. He was originally set to direct Scream 7, but after that project turned chaotic, he pivoted to this instead. What we get is a tightly contained, real-time thriller set almost entirely in a single location - a classic bottle episode setup.

The premise is simple but effective: two people meet for a first date, and soon, the woman begins receiving mysterious messages from an unknown sender, urging her to commit a terrible act. What follows is a tense What would you do? scenario - how far would you go to protect the ones you love, and at what cost?

At just 90 minutes, Drop doesn’t overstay its welcome. It moves quickly, stays focused, and delivers exactly what it promises: a fun, mid-tier thriller with a dark twist. However, some suspension of disbelief is required. Some parts in the villain reveal and plan stretch credibility, but if you can go along with it, there’s a good time to be had.

Tonally, the film plays with an interesting dynamic. From her point of view, it’s a full-on Hitchcockian suspense thriller. From his, it almost feels like an awkward date night comedy gone horribly wrong. It’s like watching two different movies layered over each other, and that contrast becomes part of the fun.

Overall, Drop delivers exactly what it sets out to be: a fast, engaging, and entertaining little thriller that scratches that itch for something tense and twisty without being overly complex.

Drop 4K Ultra HD contains the following special features:
• A RECIPE FOR THRILLS: MAKING DROP - Join the cast and crew of DROP as they sort through the ingredients of this date gone wrong.
• A PALATE FOR PANIC- Take a seat and devour the details that went into creating Palate, a film set that doubles as a fully operational restaurant.
