Double Impact (Collector’s Edition) [4K Ultra HD]
(Jean-Claude Van Damme, Alonna Shaw, Bolo Yeung, Corinna Everson, Geoffrey Lewis, et al / 2-Disc 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray / R / (1991) 2026 / MVD Rewind)
Overview: What could be better than Jean-Claude Van Damme (Lionheart) in an explosively entertaining action extravaganza? Two of him! There’s twice the excitement, twice the mayhem and twice the fun in this turbo-charged adventure that pushes the thrills into overdrive.
Van Damme leaps into the dual roles of Chad and Alex Wagner, twin brothers who were separated after their parents’ brutal murder. Years later, the two couldn’t be more different: Chad is a slick Beverly Hills fitness instructor, while Alex is a rough and tumble smuggler on the gritty streets of Hong Kong.
But when fate throws them together again, Chad and Alex discover that there’s one thing they have in common: they’re both fighting machines! Determined to enact revenge on their parents’ killers, the martial-arts experts kick, chop and shoot all the way to an electrifying final showdown aboard a gargantuan freighter in Hong Kong harbor.
4K Blu-ray Verdict: Double Impact is a fav of many Van Damme fans with moments that have lived in my head rent-free since I saw it. Past or present there’s no denying fun pieces, some casting choices yet there’s always been a feeling like something is missing. He gets to flex two roles which the marketing ran crazy with, but his earlier pics end up being a little better.
Business partners Nigel Griffith (Alan Scarfe) and Paul Wagner are behind a newly built tunnel in Hong Kong. However, when the latter and his wife are killed by the triads it becomes clear Nigel has sold him out. A maid escapes with one of the newborn twins while the other is rescued by family bodyguard Frank Avery (Geoffrey Lewis). 25 years later, Alex has remained in HK while Chad raised in France has moved to the States. When word gets to Frank about the long lost brother they go back to set things right, reclaim their inheritance.
Action movies are never a place to search for realism, but right away you’ll notice both guys sound alike for having much different paths. Also one is supposed to be handy with a gun while the other his fists, legs yet both are capable in both. There’s also set pieces to get revenge that they botch leaving them both looking kinda stupid. Honestly the story isn’t very sharp, but the finale is top notch.
Bolo Leung reteams with JCVD as another villain, but he isn’t given a lot to do and the end fight mano a mano underwhelms. Notable thugs are one who kills with spurs on his boots and a jacked female (Corinna Everson) who looks equal parts hot, scary. Alonna Shaw as Alex’s gf supplies the sole dose of nudity in a dream sequence equal parts cheesy / erotic. It left a lasting impression on me and a four-minute supercut on the internet leads me to believe it did for other guys too!
Anyway, I digress, for Double Impact is hard to hate. The 90’s energy is strong, but the fighting, gunplay is largely not and could have been better. The twin idea seemed cool at first, but Van Damme who co-wrote thought this would allow him to flex his acting muscle and branch out from a mere martial arts star. I think all it really did was further cement him in this genre without improvement. But hey, it is still a good watch on a rainy Sunday afternoon. [R.S.]
