Highway To Hell [Collector’s Edition]
(Benton Jennings, Richard Harrison, Blue Thompson, et al / Blu-ray / NR / (1990) 2026 / Visual Vengeance)

Overview: Convicted mass-murderer Toby Gilmore has escaped from prison, and the open desert becomes his playground for sadism and destruction. Determined to stop him after failing to execute him years earlier, officer Earl Dent (Richard Harrison) sets out on a relentless pursuit that turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

But Gilmore has taken a hostage - Fran Tucker, a young woman caught in the wrong place at the worst possible time. As the chase hurtles across backroads and wastelands, Dent closes in, each mile bringing he and Gilmore closer to an explosive reckoning on the highway to hell.

Shot in rural Texas, Highway to Hell stands as a prime example of the regional, low-budget filmmaking that fueled America’s video boom of the 1980’s and 1990’s. Originally released on VHS via Rae Don Home Video, the film showcases director Bret McCormick (The Abomination, Repligator), a key figure in the Texas exploitation underground, whose raw energy and ingenuity turn poverty row resources into a fast-paced, sunbaked thriller that captures the true spirit and grit of independent genre cinema.

Highway To Hell is now, and for the first time ever, on Blu-ray and includes bonus SOV feature film, Redneck County Fever (1992).

Blu-ray Verdict: So the story goes that a young girl (Blue Thompson) becomes a Hyundai hostage to Toby Gilmore (Benton Jennings) after she witnesses him killing a motorist. On the case is the police chief (Richard Harrison) who got Gilmore locked up after he tried to rape the chief’s daughter.

Personally, I have always had a lot of time for Richard Harrison, his films having led me down some very enjoyable cinematic roads (Rescue Force, Operation Las Vegas, Scorpion Thunderbolt, et al), and as much as this one isn’t his best work, the fact that he does what he can alongside Jennings’ totally bad, extremely over the top performance makes Highway To Hell a very decent watch.

A couple of scenes that always get me giggling are when Harrison is putting pins in a map to chronicle the crime spree and then, and out of nowhere and with no external discussions, simply proclaims aloud, He is going North! Another comes later on when the girl finally gets to a phone booth to call the cops and vocally agonizes, No phone book! Who do I call? before swiftly realizing the infamous three digits needed ie: 911.
