Coven Of The Black Cube [Blu-ray]
(Morrigan Thompson-Milam, Zoe Angeli, Josh Schafer, Tina Krause, Joe Swanberg, et al / Blu-ray / R / (2024) 2026 / Blood Sick Productions)
Overview: A mysterious coven helps unhappy wives murder their husbands. A deadbeat stoner turns a pizzeria into a video rental headshop, and a lost soul falls in love with a serial killer, in this queer romance cursed by black magic and the occult!
Blu-ray Verdict: In what is a highly inventive new film, we watch along as the premise unfolds: after falling out with her friend, a woman makes a new friend with a worker in a special shop that introduces her to a series of occult practices that her coven of man-hating witches use to help protect women from their abusive lives.
In what feels like a genuine throwback to the gore exploitation flicks of the mid-80’s and early 90’s, there is a lot here to love about this quite brilliant new indie film. First, we are presented a rather fun and generally enjoyable storyline that brings with it a definitive slant on what else the wondrous supernatural can do for us.
The initial meetup and introduction into the spiritual realm is very well done, with good effects, a nice script, and as we also get to see the exploits of the failing relationship with her girlfriend, itself chock full of put downs and unaccepted reactions to her burgeoning interest in mysticism, everything plays out seamlessly thereafter.
We get to also see the fight at the club that ultimately brought her to the occult shop along with her burgeoning relationship with the worker that introduces her to some occult practices. Little does she know at that moment in time everything she is now entering into is linked to a growing series of murders that are being reported to be cult like; and are basically happening in the background as the storyline progresses.
She soon becomes more involved with the coven she has now become one with and thus as the movie begins to rev up into another gear, the paths for her start to al lead towards her having to perform a ritualistic murder of unfaithful or plain unappreciative set of husbands. She is told how they are targeted, how they are sacrificed, the coven then proceeding to take out multiple men in their paths of violence.
All wrapped up within the cheesy fuzz of a plot thereafter, this old school vibe of a flashback gore film is everything you could hope it to be and more! In fact, I would go as far as saying that it’s actually the cheese factor that sells it here as an enjoyable rainy afternoon/evening, sit back and turn your brain off, home entertainment gem to watch.
