La Llorona Double Feature (Blu-ray)
(Anne Stinnett, Carlos Javier Castillo, Jim Andrews, Mary Sanchez, et al / Blu-ray / NR / 2026 / ALL3MEDIA)

Overview: A family finds the Mexican folk tale of the Weeping Lady, the Curse of La Llorona - a paranormal specter that returns from the dead to torment the living - is all too real in these gory horror films!

Curse of La Llorona - When a failed suicide attempt places young, beautiful Hana in the cross hairs of the demonic La Llorona, her family members try to save her from a grisly end. Featuring an Spanish/International cast, this is a haunting tale of one family’s fight against evil forces darker than they could possibly imagine.

Revenge of La Llorona - A reality TV crew decides to spend the night in a house that’s rumored to be haunted by La Llorona, a vengeful, scorned ghost, out to punish all who invade her domain. The host of the shoot, who’s rude, racist and desperate for ratings, hires a murderous psycho to make sure the crew gets some good footage.

Soon the entire reality TV crew find themselves stalked by not only the psychopathic hired gun, but also by the vengeful specter known as La Llorona - The Weeping Lady.

Blu-ray Verdict: First up is Curse of La Llorona (2007). A troubled family must unite to save their young niece from the sinister forces of La Llorona, an evil spirit that inhabits an abandoned house.

La Llorona is a very well known tale in Latin American folklore. It’s the story of a woman who, after her husband left, drowned her kids in a fit of rage, realized what she had done and took her own life. The legend goes that now she kidnaps children and drowns them, mistaking them for her own.

Urban legends and ghost stories are always a good formula for a horror movie, and here in this one whilst the genuine terror might be lacking, there was some cool lighting and set design, with the interior painting of the house very cooly done. A couple of surprising splashes of good performances (especially from the mom), a laughable script spoken with conviction (husband shows wife a partially-eaten brain, and she says, Dispose of that thing this instant! also add to the overall enjoyment of the film.

And we also get policewoman in her early twenties, who we meet only once, saying to the mother, Tend well to your family. This house will not accept you now and a woman near the same age as the mother and father playing the role of the daughter! I mean, horror aside (which it seems to be) this is a really fun movie to watch while getting a good buzz on; just don’t take it too seriously and don’t expect anything miraculous.

Then we get Revenge of La Llorona (2006) where a reality TV crew spends the night in a house rumored to be haunted by La Llorona, with a vengeful spirit determined to punish all who invade her domain!

The main draw of this film is one time actor Jim Andrews who plays Royce Stenton, a journalist who spews hateful and hilariously racial and anti-woman invectives through most of the film. His performance elevates what would be normally be boring into hilarious intensity. An entire film of him going off on minorities, women and even sometimes White people would have been amazing!

He would have made a good companion for Harry Russo. All the rest of the characters are unlikable either being jerks, wusses or annoying. The acting is subpar and much of the movie does not know when to quit an already dragging scene. That all said, there are some scattered inspired performances and some fun gore scenes, which all makes this movie enjoyable and a whole lot better than a lot of its Tomb of Terrors brethren.
