Creepy-Creatures Double-Feature
(Alan Hale, Allison Hayes, Kent Taylor, Peter Breck, et al / Blu-ray / R / (1998) 2026 / VCI Entertainment)

Overview: Slime People: Golden Turkey fans, attention! It’s a veritable voyage to the bottom of the sci-fi barrel as prehistoric Slime People emerge from the sewers of Los Angeles! The atom-age U.S. army is no match for this small band of spear-toting boogeymen and the city is evacuated. Left behind and forced to fight for survival are a TV sportscaster, a science professor, his two glamorpuss daughters, a bashful Marine and a nutty author in love with a sheep.

The Crawling Hand: A manned rocket returning from the Moon is invaded by an alien life force that possesses the astronaut, maintains control of his disembodied hand after a California beach crash-landing, and then imposes its will on a local medical student (Rod Lauren). Veteran players Kent Taylor, Richard Arlen, Alan Hale and Arline Judge struggle to retain their dignity in this five-fingered sci-fiasco!

Blu-ray Verdict: First up is Slime People (1963) and is where a race of strange, slimy creatures have invaded Los Angles and shrouded the city in thick fog to help them live. They use a fog machine for this. A group of people, including a TV presenter and a professor and his two daughters along with a Marine try and find a way to get rid of these creatures.

One of the daughters is kidnapped by a slime man and eventually, the Slime People are defeated when the professor throws something at the fog machine and blows it up. The Slime People then collapse and die, as they can’t live without fog. The army then rescue everybody. The TV man and Marine fall in love with each of the professor’s daughters through all of this.

The acting in this movie certainly isn’t brilliant, despite a few well known stars in the cast, including sci-fi regulars Robert Hutton (The Colossus of New York, They Came From Beyond Space), Les Tremayne (The War of the Worlds, The Monolith Monsters), Robert Burton (I Was A Teenage Frankenstein) and the girls are played by Susan Hart (The City Under the Sea) and Judee Morton.

In short, Slime People is a must for every sci-fi fan. Watch it if you get the chance.

The other movie is The Crawling Hand (1963) and tells the story of the severed hand of a dead astronaut that comes back to dangerous life so it can embark on a murderous strangling spree. Moreover, said evil appendage causes med student Paul Lawrence (wild overplayed with pop-eyed zeal by the hunky Rod Lauren) to go violently around the bend after failing to kill him!

Boy, does this notoriously looked down upon movie lay low at a lot of times, with regard such things as a flat (non)directive style by Herbert L. Strock, extremely variable acting, some slipshod special effects, leaden pacing, talky script, meandering narrative, static cinematography, and a numbing surplus of tedious filler all should confirm the fate of it, but amazingly it doesn’t!

For there are also some brilliantly gut-busting kitschy highlights include two jerky paramedics stealing beer from a murder victim’s kitchen, a positively nutty assault on a grumpy malt shop owner set to The Bird’s the Word by The Rivingtons, a supposedly dead woman in an ambulance opening her eyes and blinking, the hand being viciously assaulted by stray cats in a scrap yard, and a simply priceless it ain’t over yet! surprise ending!

Alan Hale Jr. goes above and beyond the call of duty with his robust portrayal of the local sheriff while the always dependable Allison Hayes keeps her dignity intact as the concerned Donna. As a tasty extra bonus, gorgeously voluptuous brunette knockout Sirry Steffen shows off her hot body in a two piece bikini. A hilariously horrendous hoot and a half, it may look like I poo-poo’d this movie from the start but reading between the lines you will quickly see I actually loved it! And you will too.
