[JAN 6] The Magic of Birds
By: Mabh Savage - Moon Books - $12.95
Overview: A fallen white feather that speaks of a loved one. Two magpies promising joy. The haunting call of an owl in the deep night, hinting at dark omens. For centuries, we’ve looked to the birds of air and water for answers in the form of divination, folklore, superstition, and legend.
In this book, The Magic of Birds, you’ll discover the supernatural side of songbirds like the robin, waterfowl like ducks and swans, and more well-known magical creatures like ravens and crows.
Verdict: With beautiful illustrations by Kay Savage, this book gently introduces the reader to the magical world of birds, in modern Paganism, ancient myth, and even local beliefs.
Here within this magnificently focused, and earnestly cultivated pages we learn how to integrate bird magic into your spiritual practice, what certain birds in your dreams might mean, and even hold a seasonal ritual that honors our feathered cousins.
As we know, the world is beyond great with birds in it because they are vital for healthy ecosystems (pollinating plants, dispersing seeds, controlling pests), serve as key environmental indicators showing ecosystem health, offer profound aesthetic and mental health benefits through their beauty and song, drive significant tourism, and enrich human culture and history, connecting us to the natural world.
Furthermore, they are nature’s messengers, showing us when things are going right (like Bald Eagle recovery) or wrong (like climate disruption), making our planet more vibrant, balanced, and interesting.
The Magic of Birds by author Mabh Savage (herself a writer, musician and witch) is an intoxicating expose into this most wondrous realm that connects Earth, Sea, and Sky; one which with the magic of birds within it, lovingly expands the horizons of the meaning of the magic that comes with them.
As for why she wrote this book, well, one day she awoke and discovered that her greatest fascination, even wider and more encompassing than her passion for mythology, was how she was affected by nature. And by nature she meant everything from club moss to mountains, voles to volcanoes and, of course, robins to rocs.
So she set out to produce some volumes that profoundly highlighted how the natural world has not only influenced her, but the entirety of humanity and for many millennia. To do this she decided to take an aspect of nature and really focus on it, what is magical about it, where it thrives, and who it affects.
And then, out of the blue, and luckily for Mabh, Moon Books announced they were doing a series exactly in this vein, and so she was more than delighted to be able to contribute her very own musing on the subject here within these beautifully sculpted pages of The Magic of Birds.
About the Author - Mabh Savage is a Yorkshire Witch, Pagan author, and musician with a particular interest in Irish spirituality, and folklore from all across the UK and Ireland. She is involved with several Pagan groups and explores spirituality and folklore as a way to connect to Earth and help inspire others to treat this world more kindly.
