Pagan Portals - Branwen
By: Kristoffer Hughes - Moon Books - $12.95

Overview: This brand new book entitled Pagan Portals - Branwen: Weaver of Sorrows, Healer of Souls is a journey into love, beauty, pain and loss, guided by the gentle hand of Branwen.

Verdict: For those unaware, Branwen is the legendary daughter of the Welsh Sea God, LL˙r. She is famed for her beauty, and her story is one of love, treachery and heartache.

Thus here within the dutifully crafted pages of Pagan Portals - Branwen: Weaver of Sorrows, Healer of Soul you will discover a world of myth and wonder as author Kristoffer Hughes teaches you about the nature of Branwen, the blessed Corvid, on a journey through love, beauty, pain, and loss.

You will also learn how to be in accordance with Branwen’s wisdom and discover powerful ways to deal and work with the human condition’s fickle emotions. Hughes presents Branwen through fine scholarship and vision, providing a gateway of experience with one of Wales’ least understood goddesses.

I should begin by saying that I myself do actually worship Branwen, and while My relationship with Her isn’t as strong or as close as the one I have with Rhiannon, I’m working on it. I focus a lot on concepts of peace, communication, and hospitality. I practice multiple forms of Polytheism, including both Irish and Welsh, and I’ve been searching for a deity that is great at hospitality, hearth, etc. Furthermore, I’ve been leaving offerings to Branwen for a while now - allowing Her to share what She wants in Her own time.

Indeed, a lot of people I know work with Branwen by connecting to her through her compassion and desire for peace throughout our troubled times, even though she is the one that has been most affected and most humiliated by the Irish (as I have grown to become aware of). She still has compassion for the people whose lives have been lost and I feel like that is something that is very important in the modern day; especially when everyone is so focused on themselves or their perceived groups, and such.

And so what the author - himself a native Welsh person - brings forth here is an incredibly educational, informative and personal exploration of Branwen, along with bringing forth a dutiful insight into Welsh paganism, in general.

The book serves to answer the question Who is Branwen? but doing so from a platform of relationality. For by examining Branwen’s mythological roots, her role as a modern goddess, and her relevance to those who seek meaning in loss, grief, and the search for personal sovereignty, it is revealed that Branwen is not just a character in ancient text; she is a symbol, a guide, and a reminder of the resilience found in the face of sorrow.

About the Author - Kristoffer Hughes is Chief of the Anglesey Druid Order and the award-winning author of several books on Welsh/Celtic spirituality, mythology, and magic. He is a first-language native Welsh speaker born to a Welsh family in the mountains of North Wales, as well as a Druid and member of the Gorsedd of Bards of the Island of Britain, a Druid graduate of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, a Mount Haemus Scholar, and the designer of three tarot decks.

Hughes worked for 32 years as an autopsy technologist and bereavement officer for His Majesty’s Coroner service before retiring to become a Welsh language television presenter. In addition to his role in Welsh TV, he is an active funeral celebrant and consults on the board of religious education in Wales. He is active in the school of the Anglesey Druid Order, where he teaches Druidry in the Anglesey tradition.
