Title - 'The Dovekeepers'
Artist - Jeff Beal

Based on Alice Hoffman's historical novel about the Siege of Masada, 'The Dovekeepers' is a miniseries that focuses on four extraordinary women whose lives intersect in a fight for survival at the siege of Masada.

'The Dovekeepers,' which stars Cote de Pablo ("Ziva David," NCIS) is basically, in essence a women's romance novel set during biblical times. The two-parter, directed by Yves Simoneau (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee) also stars Rachel Brosnahan and Kathryn Prescott in the title roles, alongside Diego Boneta and Sam Neill. In truth, it may well not have gotten the reviews it was hoping for, but my goodness, Jeff Beal's composed score - spread out over two discs here - is incredible, believe me.

Beal whose previous scoring credits include such shows as Rome, Monk, Carnivale and Ugly Betty, along with the movies such as 'Pollock,' 'Appaloosa' and 'Blackfish' has also recently scored the third season of Netflix’s House of Cards. [FYI: Varese Sarabande will release a third soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music from the show this spring.]

Throughout the musical tracks, the drama of the women in beautiful colorful gowns against the backdrop of the sweeping, sometimes harsh desert, is captured brilliantly by Beal. His soaring score work allows the wretched dessert to remain culled against the beautiful and clean underbelly of the storytelling. Not everyone can do this. Not everyone would have even tried such an undertaking.

With all tracks ethnically authentic for that period, some containing elements of a mysterious, and quite addictive nature, the entire score is emotionally fulfilling. No need for over the top, brash instruments here on this first disc, for when you hope for a minimalistic musical background, you simply get one.

For the second disc, and as the miniseries menace is ramped up along with the storytelling unfolding before us, the tone Beal sets is now somewhat darker in nature. The music parlays the more serious, more dangerous nature of the impending storm that comes their way, which culminates in one heck of an emotionally charged, stunningly powerful quartet of finale tracks.
