Title - 'Touchstone For Manu' (ECM)
Artist - Manu Katché

For all us fans of the great composer, 'Touchstone For Manu is a specially-price limited edition compilation of Manu Katché on ECM. On this quite delightful grouping of his finest works, the French drummer (with Ivorian origins) is joined in performances of his tunes by an outstanding cast of soloists including Jan Garbarek, Tomasz Stanko, Nils Petter Molvær, Trygve Seim, Mathias Eick, Marcin Wasilewski, Tore Brunborg, and Jacob Young.

Recorded between 2004-2012 in Oslo, New York and Pernes-les-Fontaines, and drawn from his widely acclaimed albums, Neighbourhood / Playground / Third Round / Manu Katché, Touchstone For Manu is, admittedly, nothing new. Sure, each and every track has been previously released on other easily obtained albums, but that said, this "new" compilation of recordings from Katche is still a delightful musical experience.

1. Song For Her
2. Number One
3. Take Off And Land
4. So Groovy
5. Morning Joy
6. Keep On Trippin'
7. Senses
8. Swing Piece
9. Running After Years
10. Slowing The Tides
11. Bliss

Artists: Manu Katché: drums (1-11); Mathias Eick: trumpet (1,4,5); Tomasz Stanko: trumpet (2,3); Nils Petter Molvaer: trumpet, loops (9,10,11); Jan Garbarek: tenor saxophone (2,3); Trygve Seim: tenor saxophone (1,4,5); Tore Brunborg: saxophones (6-11); Jacob Young: guitars (6,7,8); Marcin Wasilewski: piano (1-5); Jason Rebello: piano (6,7,8); Jim Watson: piano, Hammond B3 organ (9,10,11); Slawomir Kurkiewicz: double bass (1-5); Pino Palladino: bass (6,7,8)

Katché's unique drumming sets the scene and direction, with every composition and arrangement radiating outward from its rhythm-patterns. His strongly propulsive yet relaxed groove is unlike any other drummers, and it lifts up the featured soloists perfectly. Indeed, and in closing, Katché's drumming alone is fantastic throughout the entire disc and I, personally, love to hear him play the drums the way he does it. So, perhaps if you would like to hear him as I do, if you can separate your attention and just follow the drumming lines, you might just also love this CD as much as I do.
