Title - 'Roses - Remixes & Rarities'
Artist - Haywoode

For those not in the know, Haywoode (Sidney Haywoode, London) is an English female singer who is best known for the 1986 UK Top 20 hit single, "Roses".

Although she later also recorded under the name Sid Haywoode, Haywoode trained from an early age at London's Corona Stage Academy.

Her career started with modelling, dancing and acting roles in British television shows like The Gentle Touch and was a regular as a Hill's Angel on The Benny Hill Show. She also featured in movies including Ragtime and Superman.

Among singing, dancing and modelling roles in the West End theatre (Bubbling Brown Sugar), she joined Flick Colby's Zoo, as a professional dancer performing weekly on BBC One's Top of the Pops. She was approached a year later to record a demo by Sony CBS Records offering a deal.

Her debut single, "A Time Like This", reached the Top 5 in the US Hot Dance Club Play Chart, and established her distinctive brand of soulful funk/pop.

Via a succession of singles – including some tracks produced by Stock, Aitken & Waterman - tracks like "You'd Better Not Fool Around", "I Can't Let You Go" and "Getting Closer" (later covered by Kylie Minogue) immediately out her on the music map.

In July 1986, with the song "Roses," she hit the top 20 in the UK music charts and her debut album Arrival (released soon after "Roses") included Haywoode's cover version of Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover".

Due to popular demand from her '80s fans in 2011, Haywoode released an album named Bounce Back, collaborating with different producers in Australia, Netherlands, Italy and United States.

Following Cherry Pop’s well-received Special Edition reissue of Haywoode’s debut album Arrival, this new 2CD compilation brings together many sought-after mixes of her classic '80s singles, plus B-sides, rarities and unheard recordings from throughout her CBS tenure.

Remastered and compiled direct from the original CBS master tapes, Roses: Remixes & Rarities marks the first time that the majority of tracks have ever been made available on CD.

Additionally, this collection features four previously unreleased masters, including 1984’s ‘Divided Love’ and, from 1986, ‘Play With Boys’ and Bryan “Chuck” New’s full-length remix of ‘I’m Your Puppet’.

Growing up in the '80s, and being a fan of everything it musically brought forth, Haywoode was already in my head, as a name, but not as a songstress. So listening to this wondrous compilation CD of hers today has brought her hits all flooding lovingly back to me, I have to admit.

Via a succession of singles - including two forgotten gems by then-little-known underground dance producers Stock Aitken & Waterman - 'You'd Better Not Fool Around' and 'Getting Closer' - it wasn't long before full international chart success finally struck for Haywoode with 'Roses' in July 1986.

To put it simply, Haywoode's singing voice was just perfect for the music featured on this CD from that time. It proves, without a shadow of a doubt, that not only was she vocally talented, but in the videos, easy on the eye too.

Haywoode's music throughout this double CD collection will quickly transport you to much happier times, her sound one that will never be repeated. The music of the '80s had one thing that makes it unique from music from any other decade - it was all built on a rhythm of joyous, dancefloor energy.

Featuring four previously unreleased masters, including 1984's 'Divided Love' and, from 1986, 'Play With Boys' and Bryan "Chuck" New's full-length remix of 'I'm Your Puppet', fans of Gloria Estefan, Miami Sound Machine, Kylie Minogue and similar artists, will simple adore losing themselves in Haywoode's sounds, once more (I know I did).

With direct input from Sid Haywoode herself, this release boasts an extensive booklet containing her personal commentary, a fully illustrated discography, lyrics and previously unseen shots from the archive of esteemed photographer Johnny Rozsa.

Together with the Special Edition reissue of Arrival, this companion release makes all Haywoode’s CBS recordings available via Cherry Pop and is a must-have for all '80s pop, dance and boogie aficionados.
