Title - 're:member'
Artist - Ólafur Arnalds

For those not in the classical know, Ólafur Arnalds is an Icelandic multi-instrumentalist and producer from Mosfellsbær, Iceland.

Ólafur Arnalds mixes strings and piano with loops and beats crossing over from ambient/electronic to pop. Ólafur was a drummer of hardcore / metal bands Fighting Shit, Celestine, and others.

In 2009, Ólafur also formed an experimental techno project, entitled Kiasmos, with Janus Rasmussen from the Icelandic electro-pop band Bloodgroup, announcing his electronic debut album in 2014.

This new album from Olafur Arnalds, re:member features his ground-breaking new software, Stratus, which transforms the humble piano into a unique new instrument.

The Stratus Pianos are two self-playing, semi-generative player pianos which are triggered by a central piano played by Olafur, and are the centerpiece of his new works.

The custom-built software is born out of two years of work by the composer and audio developer, Halldor Eldjarn. The algorithms generated from Stratus were also used to create the innovative album artwork.

On the album Olafur uses these methods reinvigorate the compositional experience, feeding back into the creative process in a completely new way. As Olafur plays a note on the piano, two different notes are generated by Stratus, creating unexpected harmonies and surprising melodic sequences.

This highly inventive, exclusively imaginative and beyond a shadow of a doubt bright, new, fresh and vigorously appealing fourth official solo album by Arnalds takes the listener through varied moods and feelings, through different musical landscapes.

Indeed, you can hear every facet of his work – the composition, the soundtracks, the pop – bursting through, flowering, if you will; ensuring that every single beat within every single composition is as unique as a snowflake.

"This is my breaking out-of-a-shell album," Arnalds has said. "This is me taking the raw influences that I have from all these different musical genres and not filtering them. I always have my hands in many different projects at once, and I feel that this album represents that."

Amen, my brother. Amen. For this BAFTA award winning composer has brought together, as musically sculptured not only yet another brilliant piece of work, but what might actually be his most profound, ingenious to date.
