Title - 'Eyes Wide Open'
Artist - David Sancious
For those not in the know, former E-Street member David Sancious has brought out a new album entitled Eyes Wide Open (out now via Not By Sight, Inc.).
It's an 8-song project featuring legendary musicians such as Vinnie Colaiuta, Prince alumni Michael Bland and Sonny T. (Thomson).
A mix of instrumental and vocal music reminiscent of David’s group Tone, Eyes Wide Open takes a contemporary stance by addressing today’s issues head-on through David’s signature sound.
1. 'Eyes Wide Open'
2. 'In the Middle of the Night'
3. 'Urban Psalm #3'
4. 'If'
5. 'Flip It'
6. 'The Treehouse'
7. 'December'
8. 'War in Heaven'
This quite wondrous hybrid record kicks off in fine style with the funky rock guitar and punched keyboard groove of the title song, before, atop a bed of lush piano work and free flowing melodies, we get the almost-confessional 'In the Middle of the Night.'
Infusing funk, pop, rock, blues, jazz, and even a scattering of prog within every song, Sancious showcases his musical expertise here to the finest of levels. None more so perhaps than on the mid-tempo hipsway of the earthy, and resoundingly brilliant vibe of 'Urban Psalm #3.'
Next up is 'If,' a track that opens with “Excuse me, I have a question”, before lovingly dissolving into a warm, bluesy, late night club piece, and that's backed by the first of four instrumental pieces, the heightened guitar funk of 'Flip It.'
That's followed by the intricate piano work, combined with a rich, natural, mother earth ambiance on 'The Treehouse,' with the album rounding out with the pulsating, yet at all times tempered, acoustic guitar work of 'December,' with the drum-led fortitude, and sax infused magnificence of 'War in Heaven' bringing the album to a close.
