Title - A Coincidence of Cats
Artist - Andy Adamson Quintet

For those of you not in the know, Andy Adamson’s quintet focuses on original compositions, everything they perform is drawn from Adamson’s vast catalogue of original compositions that teem with exciting polyrhythms and richly contrasted harmonies.

Ergo, listeners will find a pleasant freewheeling precision in his creative pen. Thankfully, in modern times you don’t have to travel to New York only to hear jazz like this.

Indeed, Adamson glows with contentment earned through decades of self-motivation and hard work. He’s clearly in his element, collaborating with creative young musicians in music that is constantly being reinvented.

Fats Waller once told an interviewer: “We rehearse on the job, at the public’s expense.” Hearing the quote, Andy nods vigorously, indicating that Waller hit the nail on the head. This same luminous spirit and spontaneity is what you will find contained within each compositions on A Coincidence of Cats.

1. A Coincidence of Cats
2. Sagres by the Sea
3. Hummingbird
4. Lament
5. Morning Star
6. Triplet

This wonderfully vibrant, masterfully crafted new album opens on the playful title track A Coincidence of Cats and then brings us the atmospherically-charged, lushly orchestrated Sagres by the Sea and the fervent, playfully strident Hummingbird.

Up next is the organically cultured, ornately weathered Lament, which is followed by the mesmerizingly flirtatious Morning Star, the new recording rounding out on the rambunctiously impassioned Triplet.

Adamson’s current band, featured here on his latest album, A Coincidence of Cats, includes bassist Brennan Andes, known for his work with the Macpodz, the Ragbirds, George Bedard, and Vincent York. Drummer Jonathan Taylor, who has studied with pianist Geri Allen and performed with trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, is guided by what he calls a “cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary approach to improvisation.”

Ross Huff on trumpet, known locally for his clear creative flowing work with the Macpodz, the Tone Farmers, and John Latini amoung others. And saxophonist Dan Bennett, regularly heard at RUSH with the creative improv group Legendary Wings, has an arrestingly powerful tone and displays an astonishing command of his instrument.
