Title - Love Planet
Artist - Mark Etheredge

For those of you not in the know, that pianist Mark Etheredge appears smiling on the cover of his new contemporary jazz album, Love Planet, offering roses – his songs – to the world is a triumphant story of resilience.

Since the title track of his last album, 2016’s “Connected,” landed him at No. 6 on the Billboard singles chart, the keyboardist slipped into the abyss of alcoholism, going bankrupt and losing his West Hollywood home, which forced a move back to the Bay Area where he slept on a friend’s couch and watched his mother slowly slip away before she finally succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease last year.

As Love Planet readies for its August 12th, 2022 release on Vipaka Records, the now clear-eyed Etheredge is back living in his own West Hollywood place, clean and sober for fourteen months, living one day at a time with hope restored.

During the tumultuous years, Etheredge found strength and creative expression by retreating to his keyboard to compose music. Reteaming with “Connected” producer and two-time Grammy winner Paul Brown, Etheredge recorded and released two singles, “Resonance” (2019) and “You&Me&We” (2020), both of which appear on Love Planet alongside eight new songs.

Last month, Etheredge finished recording the inspired new set consisting of spirited jazz instrumentals, soulful R&B grooves, iridescent pop melodies and festive Latin rhythms, with Brown at the controls. A vibrant home run hook powers the title track, which will begin collecting playlist adds on July 18th, 2022.

This beautifully crafted work of musical art opens on the pure summer’s breeze of the title track “Love Planet” and then brings us the free flowing hipsway of “Untethered” (featuring guitarist Steve Oliver), the veritably sparkling “Groove City” (featuring saxophonist Greg Vail), some funky rhythms within “Saucy” (featuring guitarist Paul Brown) and then things are slowed down for the mid-tempo balladry of “We’ll Make It Through.”

Up next is one of my own personal favorites from this new recording, the aptly named, joyously euphoric “Elated” which is itself followed by the foot-tapping ebb and flow of “Resonance,” the beautiful R&B/jazz concoction of “Peace,” the album rounding out on the succulent smooth funk grooves within “You&Me&We” (once more featuring Paul Brown), closing on the ornate gossamer slow roll of “Golden Hour.”

Furthermore, Mark Etheredge used his experiences in recent years as the source material for the music he wrote here for Love Planet. “Untethered” and “Elated” celebrate his newfound sobriety. “We’ll Make It Through” explores the role love plays as we endure life’s difficult experiences. He lovingly offers “Golden Hour” in tribute to his mother. Watching the horrors in Ukraine unfold on television inspired his call for “Peace.”
