Title - Paradise Cove
Artist - Lisa Hilton

For those not in the know, Lisa Hilton is a composer, and an acclaimed jazz pianist as well as an experienced producer and bandleader.

Growing up in a small town on California’s central coast, Hilton originally taught herself to play music with a colored keyboard guide, writing her first simple songs around six, before beginning studies in classical and twenty first century music starting at the age of eight.

In college she switched majors from music and graduated instead with a degree in art. Hilton’s art background informs her compositions: she describes “painting” compositions using improvisation, and “sculpting” with rhythmic ideas from different cultures and eras.

Hilton’s music draws on classical traditions, and twentieth century modernists as well as classic American jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver and Count Basie, as well as blues heroes Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson.

A prolific and passionate composer, Hilton has recorded over two hundred tracks with many of today’s jazz luminaries, and her twenty six albums are regularly at the top of charts like JazzWeek every year.

In the book, “The New Face of Jazz: An Intimate Look at Today’s Living Legends and Artists of Tomorrow” by Cicily Janus, it states that Hilton has been “compared to some of the best pianists in history.” Her piano style is often mentioned along with jazz pianist/composers Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, and Brad Mehldau.

Lisa (Kristine) Hilton is also the creator and co-author of the popular children’s book, If Dinosaurs Were Alive Today (Price Stern Sloan), as well as the updated digital version by the same name.

“I think we all need jazz in our lives these days,” composer, pianist, bandleader and producer Lisa K. Hilton writes in the liner notes for her upcoming December 2ND, 2022 release, Paradise Cove (Ruby Slipper Productions 1028).

“From its inception ragtime, jazz and blues were created to boost moods or morale by America’s earliest composers, such as Scott Joplin, Ferdinand “Jelly Rolly” Morton or Nick La Rocca in the early 1900’s,” she continues. “Our world today desires and deserves a lift after the last couple years, and with the music of Paradise Cove we aim to boost spirits everywhere.”

This elegantly-crafted and warmly-conveyed new album (of nine original tracks and two cover tunes) opens on the gently impassioned, slow southern jazz-blues crawl of Dizzy Gillespie’s 1957 jazz classic Birk’s Blues and the aptly-named Fast Time Blues and they are followed by the perky, veritably flirtatious Blues Vagabond, the lushly-orchestrated Another Simple Sunday with You, and then come the infectious rhythms within one of my own personal favorites, the Latin-tinged Cha Cha À La Carte.

Along next are the free flowing melodies found within the gorgeously sumptuous Mercurial Moments and that is in turn backed seamlessly by the studious-constructed, enticing noir energy of Night Cap & a Little Chaos, the laid back, late night ambiance of Storybook Sequel, the dreamy Mediterranean Dreams, the album rounding out on the her wistfully smokey rendition of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David 1965 tune What the World Needs Now is Love, coming to a close on the warmly-enveloping sounds within the titular Paradise Cove.

Hilton’s twenty sixth recording debuts her dynamic new L.I.L.O quartet with Hilton on piano, trumpeter Igmar Thomas, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Obed Calvaire. (L.I.L.O. for their first initials). Hilton has performed with the in-demand bassist Luques Curtis regularly for several years, but the charismatic trumpeter Igmar Thomas, Curtis’s former roommate at Berklee College of Music, is a compelling addition, complimenting Hilton’s fluid style and bluesy riffs.

Drummer Obed Calvaire, who regularly works with SF Jazz Collective as well as Wynton Marsalis, contributes considerable creativity to this cohesive band. After recording at The Village Studios in Santa Monica, California Hilton declared, “The L.I.L.O quartet is my favorite band ever…I bet anyone listening will hear the enjoyment we had!”

Also, Hilton chose the title Paradise Cove as a reference to our cultural need to find a ‘cove’ or protected spot in our personal lives on a daily basis to escape, revitalize, or reboot and to create a ‘paradise’ or state of grace amid today’s fast moving times.
