Title - 'The Essential Donovan' (Sony Legacy)
Artist - Donovan
For those not in the know, Donovan was a sixties Icon. To have a sixties collection, Donovan must be a part of it, crossing boundries and providing further definition as to what the 60's were truly about.
This new, essential 2CD collection is an excellent introduction to Donovan's many musical faces. From his Dylanesque era, to his Psychedelic phases (where many of his hits came from), to the more mature and rock crafted phase, and then full circle to more introspective, The Essential Donovan is, thankfully just that.
Admittedly, it all seems a bit dated now, but if you loved it when it was new, you'll find yourself responding to the old favorite catchy tunes like 'Mellow Yellow' as well as the more spiritually uplifting fantasies of 'Atlantis,' 'The Hurdy Gurdy Man,' 'Season Of The Witch,' 'Catch The Wind,' and so many more.
Indeed, if you like Folk music in general, this 2CD provides a true, deep example of his Folk phase. I mean, with coming to us inclusive of 36 tracks, one would assume, and hope so anyway, in truth! And for all you Donovan purists out there, Essential also includes his early material issued on Hickory Records.
As for some of the extras included, well, we have 'Sunshine Superman' (Extended Version), 'The Land Of Doesn't Have To Be' (Early Version), and a rousing version of 'Barabajagal (Love Is Hot)' with The Jeff Beck Group.
