Title - Sequoia
Artist - Kylie Fox

For those not in the know, Fredericton-based singer songwriter Kylie Fox has reached a pivotal point in her music career. After making her introduction with the Balcony EP in 2017, Fox recruited EMCA award winning producer Dale Murray to create her claimed debut full-length album, Green.

Now firmly established as a prominent, emerging voice in both folk and indie rock circles in Atlantic Canada, her next moves may be her most important.

To help plot her course, Fox enlisted some of the Fredericton region’s most ubiquitous and sought after musicians. For the past few years she has been backed by a dream team of local players that includes multi-instrumentalist Kelly Waterhouse, drummer Ryan Barrie, bassist Camilo Villamizar, and lead guitarist Sean Hutchins, all four of which are featured alongside Fox and producer by Daniel Ledwell on her latest single.

Confetti was that single, a one sided, scornful love song with an awkward twist. “This song is actually a fairy tale break-up I stole from one of my friends,” said Fox of the inspiration behind writing the song.

And so it was Fox’s single that delightfully offered a dutiful, and insightful first glimpse of what’s to come from her upcoming sophomore album, Sequoia (out now).

1. Sequoia
2. Brandi Baby
3. Confetti
4. Ming Mei
5. Flush
6. Hit
7. Alberta
8. Spend the Morning with Me
9. Flying Dreams
10. Ali’s Wedding
11. Certain

This vibrantly melodious new recording, and one that delves into folk-Canadiana while exploring folk-rock and jazz-pop fusion, opens on the impassioned title track Sequoia and the rhythmically staggered Brandi Baby (a heartfelt tribute to Brandi Carlile, although interestingly enough the you in the song is Fox’s drummer and fiancé, Ryan Barrie), and then we get the upbeat and free flowing Confetti, the melodiously low slung Ming Mei and the silky smooth pop styling of Flush (which humorously lists said same fiancé’s flaws!)

With Fox herself describing the album as ’70s Sesame Street meets Sharon Van Etten, and all the tracks reflections on gratitude in relation to the women in her life, her environment, her relationships, and her very own self-awareness, along next is the gentle funk that drives Hit and the languishing Alberta, and they are backed by the lovely Spend the Morning with Me, rounding out with the more stridently structured Flying Dreams, coming to a close on the passively harmonic Ali’s Wedding, and the stillness of storytelling within Certain.
