Title - Found In Space: The Music Of Gregg Hill
Artist - Micheal Dease

For those not in the know, Michael Dease is one of the world’s eminent trombonists, lending his versatile sound and signature improvisations to over 200 recordings and groups as diverse as Grammy winning artists David Sanborn, Christian McBride, Michel Camilo, and Alicia Keys.

Born in Augusta, GA, he played the saxophone and trumpet before choosing the trombone at age 17. In 2001, Dease moved to New York City to become part of the historic first class of jazz students at The Juilliard School, earning both Bachelors and Masters degrees, and quickly established a reputation as a brilliant soloist, sideperson, and bandleader.

Dease’s unique blend of curiosity, hard work and optimism has helped him earn worldwide recognition, including awards from ASCAP, The International Trombone Association, Yamaha, Eastern Trombone Workshop, New York Youth Symphony, Hot House Magazine, Michigan State University, among others.

And now the perennial DownBeat Critics Poll winner has just released his brand new album, Found In Space: The Music Of Gregg Hill on Origin Records.

1. The Last Pop Tune (7:37)
2. Found in Space (8:34)
3. One for Rodney (6:42)
4. The Stray Moonduck (6:28)
5. The Puppet Thief (6:27)
6. Rue De Royal (6:35)
7. Chillin With Wess (7:42)
8. Anthem (7:32)
9. Nostalgia (6:25)
10. A Wrinkle in Time (7:06)

This second pairing of the trombonist and prolific composer Gregg Hill opens on the almost Exorcist-esque lines of what then shows itself to be a highly cinematic The Last Pop Tune and then we get the flirtatiously comfortable title track Found in Space, the playful One for Rodney, the looming The Stray Moonduck and the low slung finger-snapper The Puppet Thief.

Full of reminders of ’70s cinema, Zappa albums circa The Grand Wazoo, bebop, and Big Bands through the ages, along next is the joyously forthright Rue De Royal which is it turn followed by the languishing Chillin With Wess, the elegantly organic vibe of Anthem, the album rounding out on the flighty Nostalgia, closing on the fervently impassioned A Wrinkle in Time.
