Title - Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision [5LP]
Artist - Jimi Hendrix

For those unaware, Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision is the latest in-depth project from Experience Hendrix, encompassing 5 LP / 1 Blu-Ray of previously unreleased music Jimi Hendrix recorded at his newly created recording facility in 1970.

The deluxe box set offers 39 tracks (38 previously unreleased) that were recorded by the new-look Experience (Billy Cox on bass, Mitch Mitchell on drums) at Electric Lady Studios between June and August of 1970, just before the legendary musicians untimely death the following month.

The project also includes 20 newly created 5.1 surround sound mixes of the entire First Rays Of The New Rising Sun album plus three bonus tracks [Valleys Of Neptune, Pali Gap, and Lover Man].

The Blu-ray includes the critically acclaimed, full-length documentary Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision. The film chronicles the creation of the studio, rising from the rubble of a bankrupt Manhattan nightclub to state-of-the-art recording facility inspired by Hendrix’s desire for a permanent studio.

The 5LPs were pressed on audiophile grade vinyl by Quality Record Pressings and the box set includes an extensive booklet filled with unpublished photos, Hendrix’s handwritten song drafts, and comprehensive liner notes.

LP 1:
SIDE ONE
1. Ezy Ryder [Alternate Mix]
2. Valleys Of Neptune [Alternate Version]
3. Straight Ahead [Takes 1 & 2]
4. Astro Man [Takes 9 & 10]
5. Drifting [Takes 1 & 2]
6. Night Bird Flying [Take 25]

SIDE TWO:
7. Earth Blues [Alternate Mix]
8. Drifters Escape [Takes 1 & 2]
9. Astro Man [Take 14]
10. Further Up The Road

With these sessions seeing Hendrix hard at work creating First Rays Of The New Rising Sun, an ambitious double album that was planned to follow 1968’s Electric Ladyland, the first LP opens on an alternative mix of Ezy Rider, alone a massive jewel in an already highly decorated crown, and then we get the blues roots of an alternative version of Valleys Of Neptune, the funky depths plumed on two takes of Straight Ahead, two takes of the veritable mid-70’s punk vibe of Astro Man, the side rounding out on the nostalgic melancholy of two takes of Drifting and the still inventively fresh Night Bird Flying.

Flipping the vinyl over and we next get an alternative mix of the spiritual wanderings lyrically brought forth on the brilliant Earth Blues, which is in turn backed by the two takes that showcase his soulful falsetto perfectly within Drifters Escape, another rendition of Astro Man [Take 14], coming to a close on the pure, unadulterated blues of Further Up The Road.

LP 2:
SIDE ONE
1. Dolly Dagger [Takes 17 & 18]
2. Lover Man
3. Freedom [Take 4]
4. Angel [Take 7]
5. Beginnings [Take 5]

SIDE TWO
6. The Long Medley [Astro Man / Beginnings / Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) / Midnight Lightning (Keep On Groovin) / Freedom]

The second LP within this simply magnificent box-set - and one that offers a comprehensive look at the work Hendrix undertook during that summer of 1970 - opens on a couple takes of the smooth, funk-oriented Dolly Dagger, and then we get the kick ass guitar licks that drive Lover Man, the melodically crafted guitar rocker Freedom, a stunning, sheer perfection personified take of Angel, the side rounding out on the howling, funky guitar that ebbs and flows within Beginnings.

Flipping the vinyl over and what we have here covering the entire other vinyl side is The Long Medley [Astro Man / Beginnings / Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) / Midnight Lightning (Keep On Groovin) / Freedom], and boy, what a delightfully reflective gem it truly is.

My advice is to just put the needle on the record, close the lid, step back, turn the volume up, and then get on with things around the house, as this five-track medley helps drive the impetus within your home life duties.

LP 3:
SIDE ONE
1. Freedom [Alternate Version/July 19, 1970]
2. Valleys Of Neptune [Demo]
3. Tune X/Just Came In [Take 6] (Medley)
4. Drifting [Alternate Version/August 20, 1970]
5. Messing Around [Take 17]

SIDE TWO
6. Tune X / Just Came In (Take 8) (Medley)
7. Dolly Dagger [Alternate Version]
8. Come Down Hard On Me [Take 15]
9. Heaven Has No Sorrow [Demo]

The third record in the set opens on a waveringly alternate version of Freedom and a free flowing demo of Valleys Of Neptune, a cobbled together medley of both Tune X/Just Came In [which was itself originally titled In From The Storm, and which had an amazing thirty takes put to tape; this one being #6], the side rounding out on an alternative version of Drifting and a song that lyrically owes a lot to Hey Joe, the brilliant Messing Around.

Flipping the record over and next up is another take on the aforementioned medley Tune X / Just Came In, which is in turn followed by an alternative version of the softer rock of Dolly Dagger, the LP closing on a tangential slide from Foxy Lady into the guitar masterclass Come Down Hard On Me and the emotively impassioned demo Heaven Has No Sorrow.

LP Four:
SIDE ONE
1. Midnight Lightning / Beginnings
2. Dolly Dagger [Mix 2]
3. Belly Button Window [Take 1]

SIDE TWO
4. Night Bird Flying [Alternate Version]
5. Freedom [Alternate Version/August 20, 1970]
6. Straight Ahead [Alternate Mix]
7. In From The Storm [Alternate Mix]

The fourth vinyl record opens on the medley of the beautiful, passively angry storm lyrically brewing within Midnight Lightning coupled with the manic energy and craftmanship that is Beginnings, another mix of Dolly Dagger, the soul-bearing blues of Belly Button Window (a track that with Mitch and Lynn Mitchell’s baby about to be born, Jimi imagined that the baby could see the world through his mom’s belly button window) rounding the side out.

Flip the vinyl over and next you will be presented with four alternative mixes, the first being the most delightfully poetic imagery that is Night Bird Flying, another cut of Freedom, Jimi’s words of wisdom coming to the musical fore on the Straight Ahead, and finally the phenomenal, always evolving lost track In From The Storm.

LP 5:
SIDE ONE
1. Bolero / Hey Baby (New Rising Sun) [Alternate Mix]
2. Drifters Escape [Alternate Mix]

SIDE TWO
3. Bleeding Heart [Alternate Mix]
4. Drifting [Alternate Version/ November 20, 1970]
5. Astro Man [Alternate Version]
6. Room Full Of Mirrors [Alternate Version]
7. Angel [Alternate Version]

The fifth, and final LP opens on a medley of two songs, the first played out showcasing a musician far ahead of his time, for his rendition of Bolero is simply stunning, and is backed by an alternative mix of the underrated blues ballad Hey Baby (New Rising Sun), the side rounding out on another mix of Drifters Escape.

Flipping the vinyl over and we get five more alternate versions of his tracks, such as the propulsive jam Bleeding Heart, another Drifting, a rather plentiful Astro Man, the record, and the box as a musical whole, culminating on a raw and explosive Room Full Of Mirrors, and a beautiful Angel.
