Title - Fool’s Fate
Artist - Rik Wright

For those unaware, Rik Wright has long occupied a distinctive space in the creative music scene, blending worldbeat rhythms, rock-band intensity, jazz vocabulary, and open-ended improvisation into a body of work that moves comfortably across traditions. A Seattle-based guitarist and composer, Wright leads Fundamental Forces, a quartet known for its balance of precision and spontaneity.

Between 2013 and 2016, Wright released Blue, Red, Green, and the live recording Subtle Energy, a four-album stretch that captures a band hitting its stride. With each release, the ensemble grew more fearless and assured, deepening its musical synergy.

Over time, the group has developed a shared musical language that gives the collective an identity distinct from any one of its members. Wright has kept the original lineup of Fundamental Forces intact since 2010, a rare continuity in a field where personnel frequently rotate from project to project. That stability has fostered a level of trust and responsiveness that lends the music both elasticity and weight, qualities that come fully into focus on the group’s newest release.

With Fool’s Fate (coming in July 2026), Wright takes a decisive step forward. The album carries the hallmarks that have defined Fundamental Forces — tightly woven syncopations, fearless improvisation, and addictive melodicism — while introducing a sharper edge and new momentum.

The performances are more aggressive and the compositions more focused, the band’s chemistry nearly telepathic, marking a confident return and a compelling new chapter.

6. Mixing Glass
7. Something Sadd and Sweet

Bringing forth a rare intersection of highly accessible, dutifully original jazz, which is at all times seamlessly blended with a melodic lilt, sometimes even funky, but always beautifully melodious, Rik opens his new recording on the absorbent title cut Fool’s Fate and then we get the emotive Nothin’ but a Thang and the affectingly brilliant Freezer Jam.

Along next is the veritably cinematic landscape of Luminescence which is itself backed by a dutifully impassioned Glitter Bomb, the set rounding out on the fluid openness of Mixing Glass, coming to an all too soon close on some engaging musical complexities that thread throughout Something Sadd and Sweet.
