Her signature style of composing for orchestra is characterized by unique sonic effects that echo contemporary music production techniques. Her works are profoundly influenced by Black American music, creating a vibrant and kaleidoscopic sonic palette.
Thematically, her compositions are deeply rooted in the experiences of community, culture, and life, offering a rich and evocative musical narrative. Her artistic reflections on Black stories, music, and experience have led to works aligned with Afrofuturism, a movement that imagines alternate realities and a liberated future viewed through the lens of Black cultures.
Allison enjoyed three seasons as a Composing Fellow with the Cleveland Orchestra. Patchwork, an album of new chamber works, celebrates a culmination of Allison’s inspirational collaboration with the ensemble’s extraordinary musicians.
The six pieces on Patchwork are powerful and candid reflections on human relationships, patriotism, nature, homeland, justice, racism, community and resilience, expressed through a rich and evocative musical narrative.
1. Patchwork (9:56)
2. Can You See? (chamber version) (6:00)
3. Homeland (6.04)

Hull’s genre-defying style is vibrantly brought to life first on the stridently encapsulating Patchwork and the stoically ethereal Can You See? (chamber version) and then we get gifted the chillingly ambient Homeland, the stridently jagged fare of The Pattern, the set rounding out on the spiraling divisiveness of the melodious Kalief, coming to a close on an all-embracing strength that threads throughout Shine.
