Title - September
Artist - Martin Wind
For those unaware, bassist and composer Martin Wind was born in Flensburg, Germany, in 1968 and moved to New York in 1996 to study at New York University (NYU) on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
In 1995, he earned a diploma as an orchestral musician from the Music Conservatory in Cologne, studying with Prof. Wolfgang Güttler, former bassist with the Berlin Philharmonic.
In 1998, he received his master’s degree in jazz performance and composition at NYU, studying with Mike Richmond, Jim McNeely, Tom Boras, Mike Holober, and Kenny Werner.
Since moving to New York, Martin has become a regular at major jazz venues and an in-demand session player. His film credits include The Alamo, Intolerable Cruelty, Mona Lisa Smile, Fur, True Grit, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Gemini Man.
Martin has released more than 20 albums as a leader or co-leader, beginning with his debut Gone with the Wind (1993). Other highlights include the quartet recordings Salt & Pepper (2007) and Get It? (2009), and the orchestral album Turn Out the Stars - Music Written or Inspired by Bill Evans (2014), featuring Scott Robinson, Bill Cunliffe, and Joe La Barbera; and his new work of musical art is entitled September, and is actually also a celebration of its own 30th anniversary.

On what is an ambient dialogue between continents, generations, and musical temperaments, Wind opens his new recording on the softly strung, and beautifully grooved Dance with the Wind (feat. Scott Robinson) and then we are gifted the low slung, impeccably sculpted Late Summer Lullaby and then we get the upbeat and perky charmer Relay (feat. Scott Robinson), the soaring September Serenade (feat. Scott Robinson), before the emboldened King of the Castle is brought forth.
Along next is the organically sculpted Moon and Sand and an aching yearn that threads throughout the doleful Couleur D’Automne and they are in turn backed seamlessly by the infectiously sprung Frog Legs (feat. Scott Robinson), the impassioned Pro Zeca, the set rounding out on the smoothly confident swagger of September Song, coming to a close on the furtively alluring Rugby (feat. Scott Robinson).
