Title - Vivaldi: Concerti per vari strumenti II
Artist - Gianluca Capuano & Les Musiciens du Prince-Monaco
For those unaware, Gianluca Capuano is an Italian conductor and keyboardist known for his expertise in Baroque and early Classical music. He’s particularly celebrated for his interpretations of composers like Vivaldi, Handel, and Gluck.
Capuano frequently leads ensembles in historically informed performances, bringing a fresh and vibrant approach to well-loved repertoire. He’s built a strong reputation through recordings and live performances, showcasing both instrumental works and operas.
With these three discs, the Vivaldi Edition continues its adventure, step by step, unearthing recently discovered pieces and also consecrating pillars of the Venetian composer’s repertoire, foraging in the concertante register as well as in the vocal collection, illustrating both the extent of the genius of Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) and what we still have to discover of a protean but recognizable work.

Conducted by Giulio Prandi at the head of the Ghislieri Choir and Orchestra, they open this new recording on Concerto for Flute, Oboe, Bassoon and Strings in F Major, RV 570 “Tempesta di Mare”: which begins with the grandeur of Allegro, the atmospheric Largo and ends with the spirited Presto; and then we get Concerto for 2 Violins, 2 Oboes, 2 Recorders and Bassoon in C Major, RV 557: which begins on the strong Allegro non molto, the resplendent Largo, culminating with the formidably regal Allegro non molto.
Then comes Concerto for Violin and Oboe in F Major, RV 543: which opens on the buoyant Allegro, before both the stately Allegro alla Francese and the robust Allegro are brought forth, the set rounding out on the elegant Minuet; and then we have Concerto for 4 Violins in B-Flat Major, RV 553: which opens on the aching yearn of Allegro, with the decadent Largo along next, rounding out on the fashionable Allegro.
The new collection comes to a close on Concerto for 2 Oboes in D Minor, RV 535: which itself begins with the imperial Largo, the all-embracing Allegro, and then we get the graceful Largo, the last section being the forthright Allegro molto; and finally comes Concerto in C Major in C Major, RV 555: which opens on the fanciful Allegro, the decorative Largo a piacimento, coming to a close on the studious Allegro.
